Understood but I assume they really don't care at this point if they have his permission or not. I'm sure they expect he'll give it a go since no one else seems to want him. He could gamble that the contract is the reason they wouldn't have picked him up but at this point that's a fair sized gamble.

I'm sure they do care, as they can't send him down without his permission.
THey would be left with releasing him (but still owing his salary) and paying him to pitch elsewhere, or pitching him.
What gamble? At worse he'll pitch in someone else's minor league system, and at best he'll pitch in the majors.
I'm just saying if they put him through waivers that says something about their current feelings about him and that they have some reason for placing him on those waivers. No one claimed him so he has to question whether he will get another opportunity or not. I suspect someone will give him a minor league offer but if that's the case why not just accept a trip to Louisville and try to work on getting back to pitching like he did quite a bit last year and honor his contract? He's not helping us currently or much at all thus far so something needs to be done.

"I tried to play golf, but I found out I wasn't very good." -Joey Votto on his offseason hobby search
An MLB.com reporter asked what one thing Votto couldn’t do. “I can’t skate or play hockey,” Votto said. “Well, I can skate ... but I can’t stop.”
Stubbs is ready- it's time.
