MLB Trade Rumors on the Reds

    Discussion: The Reds
By Eddie Schmid [June 17, 2009 at 9:56pm CST]
John Fay at the Cincinnati Enquirer got a hold of Reds president Bob Castellini and wondered if the Reds would add any payroll through a trade. Castellini's response:

"We've got some flexibility. We're not looking. We've got some key guys in sick bay right now."

The "key guys" he's referring to are Joey Votto, who's supposedly on track for a rehab assignment, Edwin Encarnacion, and Edinson Volquez. All are due back before the All-Star break.

After a win tonight, the Reds stand two games above .500 at 33-31, but they're still in good enough shape for the NL Central, where they're only three games behind the first-place Brewers and two games behind the Wild Card-leading Cardinals (pending tonight's results). While their team ERA sits at a stellar 3.86, good for fifth in the league, their team OPS sits at fifth-to-last in the majors at .710.

If you're the Reds GM, are Votto and Encarnacion the answers to your offensive woes? Or should they pursue a bat such as, say, Aubrey Huff or Luke Scott, as suggested by Jon Paul Morosi, or Mark DeRosa, as put forth by SI's Tom Verducci? Or something completely different altogether? Discuss your take.

Aubrey Huff, no thank you, Luke Scott is not enough of an improvement, if any over Nix to give up anything and pay the higher salary. Derosa would be a good improvement over Hairston, but after EE comes back, I'm not sure where Hairston is going to play. Would Derosa be an improvement over Gomes?

After Votto and EE come back, the logical spots for improvement would be SS and CF. CF can be upgraded with in-house options (Dickerson). Finding an upgrade at SS will be difficult though because it will likely be very costly.

Would Derosa be an improvement over Gomes?
Yes. He plays several positions, thereby providing depth, and he's got solid power without the all or nothing approach that Gomes has.

Re: MLB Trade Rumors on the Reds

Might I suggest looking thru the bargain bin. I know people get tired of hearing me say it but the Reds since this economic downturn started have show little inclination to add much in the way of salary. Every move seems like it's done with dollars in mind taking priority over everything else. So whomever they go after (if they even cave to such a thing) must have the following qualifications or at least a majority of them.

Probably less than 2-3 million at the absolute most or the other team must take back an undesireable contract.
Must provide adequate to above defense.
    Must have some versatility defensively.
Must have average or better speed.
Must make average to above contact.
    And preferably bring some pop.
Must not cost anything more than 2-3 prospects of Tier II worth or less.
Probably only would be a CIF/OF type.

That is probably the type of guy they are looking for if they ever actually look. So the 1st 2 guys who come to mind are again Scott Hairston (LF/RF/CF) or Lastings Milledge (LF/RF/CF) or perhaps a backup 1B/3B/COF type. And given Dusty's penchant for appreciating a veteran type model Hairston is the best current alternative and he is healthy. Milledge may not be seen as someone who can currently help (But I think Dusty would like him).
