    Alonso Out With Broken Hamate

Filed under: Daily Dish, Training Room

Yonder Alonso was placed on the seven-day disabled list at Double-A Carolina with a broken hamate bone in his right hand. Alonso injured his hand swinging on a 3-0 fastball in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday. According to a press release, the Reds—who drafted Alonso seventh overall last year out of Miami—plan to further assess Alonso in the coming days to determine his rehabilitation schedule.

The first baseman hit .302/.378/.503 with seven home runs and 37 RBIs. In his time with the Mudcats, he’s hitting .246/.309/.377 with one home run.

Sucks about Alonso, I assume his injury is going to require surgery...is he done for the year?

I was kind of hoping that Leake would shut it down for 2009 anyway. I can wait...

Still haven't read or seen anything out here about Leake's serious tendonitis...although the talking heads are speculating that Blair will start tonight.

Alrighty then. I guess ASU isn't too concerned about hurting his future. And of course Leake will want to play in this situation even if he shouldn't. He's still a kid. I can't believe they are letting him pitch in this situation and risk hurting his future.

Either ASU doesn't care, or the report of "serious tendonitis" was bs...

Yep, sure is. Second inning, 0-0 against Texas. This is an elimination game for ASU (2-1). Texas hasn't lost yet (2-0).

I'm not too concerned about Alonso. Except for the sapped power his first few months back that has been mentioned before it may not affect much. I was concerned about Leake even less but pitching in a big college game now when he's not 100% isn't something I'm crazy about to say the least.

Injured Hamate is what WMP had when in Boston in 06.

I remember at the time Ortiz saying it took a year for power to return.

Ortiz had it back in 98 and Pedroia in 07.

Jr had the bone removed too.

Fernando Martinez (rookie NYM outfielder) comes to mind as another that had a broken hamate bone a year or two ago.

    Awesome day. :thumbdown
I'm getting sick of this. I was watching Leake pitch in the 6th tonight when I heard them saying that it's right above the elbow, and I'm thinking, "Shut this guy down!".

    I can't take it.

Will someone please sacrifice a chicken or something?

Thompson, Buck, Bray, Alonso, .....someone stop this....these were key players in 2010 and some would have helped in 2009.
