    Stat of the day

Good little stat here from Gammons:

    3. Pitching efficiency is a wonderful thing. Players love pitchers who get one-pitch outs. I believe Greg Maddux once said a perfect game is 27 pitches, 27 outs.

Cliff Lee leads the majors in one-pitch outs with 45, which tells us that had the Indians played better defense, his record would be considerably better. Aaron Harang and Zach Duke are next with 41, while Jon Garland (4.0), Harang (4.0), Lee (3.9) and Glen Perkins (3.9) are the first-pitch strikes per nine innings leaders.
"You can't let praise or criticism get to you. It's a weakness to get caught up in either one."

    --Woody Hayes

I wonder how the Reds do in one-pitch-outs-against.

    Or one-pitch-hits allowed.

Albert Pujols, for all his heroics this year, has one hit with a RISP and two outs (1-for-14, with 15 BB and 10 IBB), and as Joel Sherman of the New York Post (and SI.com) pointed out, Mets' youngster Nick Evan passed Pujols with two in two days versus Pujols' Cardinals.

So we should change the title to "meaningless stat of the day"?

    More useless data

Babe Ruth never struck out more than 93 times a year, 3 players in MLB have that many today. Chris Davis, Mark Reynolds and Carlos Pena.

Last night Davis and Reynolds faced off in AZ. They have 202 K's in a combined 498 abs 1 every 2.54 ab. Dave Kingman ONLY K'd every 3.64 abs

Dave Nicholson who is the torchbearer for K rate averaged 1 every 2.47 ab's

Ted Williams never had a 200 hit season.

Ted was the last .400 hitter but Marty and Jeff would give him hell for not slapping the ball to the opposite field.

Once someone asked the Yankee manager (McCarthy??) if DiMaggio could bunt, "I don't know he replied, and I don't ever plan on finding out."

That's a little surprising. I would've expected him to have had at least a couple of them.

Last year Arizona third baseman Mark Reynolds struck out 203 times, which was more than the biggest strikeout seasons of Babe Ruth, Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio combined. Ruth never struck out 100 times in a season. Frank Robinson had one 100-strikeout season, and called it "the worst year of my life.'' But in 1991, Blue Jays shortstop Manny Lee struck out 107 times and didn't hit a home run, the only player ever to strike out 100 times in a season without hitting a home run. Williams never struck out 65 times in a season. DiMaggio never struck out 40 times in a season. Chris Davis, in his second major league season, struck out 43 times in May. He struck out in 21 straight games this year; DiMaggio's longest strikeout streak was four games.
Bill Buckner never struck out three times in one game, but Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard has struck out four times in a game 14 times; the record is 23 by Reggie Jackson, followed by Bo Jackson's 19. Howard is one of the premier power hitters in the game, but he already has more career strikeouts than Williams in nearly four times fewer games.
