How would you rate the Reds' 2009 draft signings?

Now that we know who signed and who didn't.

Do you dock the Reds for failing to offer up enough money for either Marrerro or Perez? Should they have gone for more of the middle round guys that didn't sign?

    What say you?

I don't know how you can dock the Reds on guys that didn't sign unless you know how willing they were to sign and how much money they were offered.

IMO, what's going to separate the winners from the losers in this draft is how many lower draft picks rise to prominence. Fellhauer, Silva, Barnhart, Braun and Stramp are the sorts of guys who are going to make this draft for the Reds.

Having Leake progress quickly to the majors (2012 rotation slot) is also a key. FWIW, I think he can do that.

I don't think you limit it to lower picks, an awful lot of first round picks still wash out.

it's good to sign guys. we used to sign 6 of the top 10 then five of them struggled so badly from the get go that they were cut within 18 months.

now we're signing everyone, and players are already beating up low A teams. that is all right.

As of now, in extremely limited samples, Fellhauer looks good. Banrhart, Hamilton, and Read are potential bargains and Leake and Boxberger appear solid bets for at least a taste of the bigs.

B, so far. Largely on Fellhauer.

For sure. I'm just saying that I expect a lot of teams will turn up some primo players from rounds 3-50 in this draft.

Juan Silva is looking very good so far with the GCL Reds. After 111 atbats, he's hitting .288/.378/.441 - .819 OPS. I was very impressed with his tools in his scouting video. It's good to see him putting them to use already.

I like the top 11 rounds quite a bit so far, assuming the top 2 guys end up showing something. Pretty much drops off a cliff after Johnson at 11, though.

All VERY preliminary. First impressions only.

I would have to say that the talent level currently in Billings (or lack thereof) is rather disturbing. You have to get some decent players after the seventh round (Heisey, Dorn, Rosales, etc.).

I have to wonder, quite frankly, if the Reds need to figure out what is going wrong. Are they not investing enough in the scouting department? Are the scouts being asked to cover too much territory and thus, not able to see players enough times to make an accurate judgment? Are the scouts just not doing a good job of evaluating?

If you look at the talent level right now in Billings, Dayton, and Sarasota, I think it is way down.

Very much agree with this, though I'd add that I think Boxberger is a key. Barring injury, I think Leake will be a major league starter, at least mid rotation. If Boxberger becomes a starter, too, then it's been a really good draft. Otherwise not so much. Really haven't had a chance to look at the early returns on many of the guys yet but am looking forward to doing so. I'm not at all surprised we didn't sign Marrero or Perez so I'm not troubled by that.

Billings, yeah. But Yorman is there, and he may end up being the kind of elite player that really minimizes a weak wave in the system. Dayton? I think the talent there may be underrated, given that the team started so poorly. Rojas looks interesting now. So does Wiley. Fellhauer may be something. Sappelt, since promoted, could end up a 4th/5th OF. Means has potential. Coddington has to be on the radar since he's a catcher who appears to be able to hit a little. Sulbaran's an interesting arm. While none of the guys looks anything like a difference maker, I think you may have some players there who make it. And Leake and Boxberger, age-wise, fit in with this group, more or less. Sarasota, if you mean the high A team, has been weak, for sure. I think Soto has survived and can still develop into a dangerous hitter. Other than that, I see both Fairel and Mesoraco as having a chance, but they face stiff challenges. If you mean GCL Sarasota, I think the talent there is the best it's been in a long time.

So, yeah, below AA they're weaker. But the dropoff looks less disastrous than it did 6 weeks ago. And there's hope for what that GCL team may bring down the road.

It's sparse for sure, though Dayton has Wiley, Fellhauer, Rojas, Puckett, Sulbaran, Joseph, Serrano and Infante. That's a group that should at least taste moderate success as it moves up the food chain.

However, it would be nice to see a few bats lay waste to the Pioneer League.

I think he'll be on the Stewart plan. I expect him to be in AAA this time next year.
