    You know what is funny...

I havent checked the standings at all over the past week. Started a new job, been really busy and havent been able to do much besides check the box scores and the outcomes. It was a really disappointing series against the Phils when we should have taken at least 2 and maybe 3 if the wheels didnt fall off yesterday.

I got home tonight after work and dinner and some other activities, fully assuming Arroyo got rocked again... well I'll be damned he throws a gem and for kicks I look at the standings really not knowing where we are.

We are only 1 game under .500. and think of what we have been through so far
    - W/O our Pujols for a number of games (where would the cards be)
    - With a minor league 3b basically the entire year
    - without our BEST pitcher from last year (Volquez)
    - without a ML SS
    - with a platoon in LF (which is going great)
    - with a CF'er OPSing below .600 and playing crappy D

So here is a props to Jocketty (minus Willy) for putting together a team that will not fold and crumble through adversity but giving us guys that can come and fill in, (Hernandez, Gomes, Nix) for basically nothing. And most importantly not freaking out and making a stupid deal.

And here is props to Baker for doing whatever it is he does to get these guys ready to compete night in and night out after what seems to be the end of things. There have been about 5 times in the last week where I thought this was the point the Reds turn downward, and they have responded in some fashion whether it be a 1 run win, or losing 2 tough ones then picking up a huge shutout. Every night someone steps up to be the man, now we just have to get multiple guys stepping up at once.

And for the love of God, keep the Jocketty/Baker needs to go crap outta this thread...it is apparent Baker is from another baseball planet that none of us are from, but it is also clear that he knows something we don't as far as getting his unmatched teams ready to play (partially because of his own fault). And for Jocketty, he is the best guy we have had come to this ORG in a longggg time.

In reality we should all be glad we are getting to argue over who needs to go who we need to bring into improve and so on, because after all with no discussion and excitement(ala the nationals) the season would just blow. And no matter what happens at least we have some excitement, but i sure do want to win the damn thing now.

Re: You know what is funny...

Why is that funny? We're a .500 team, period. That's all we can hope for, even at full strength, with this current roster.

What's funny is that we are still in the race being around .500. That says more about our competition than us.

We are in the midst of a challenging July schedule that should make or break us. It would have been nice to upgrade BEFORE heading into this stretch versus afterwards.

More than likely we'll be struggling to stay at/near .500 and if we don't, we start selling.
If we do, undoubtedly the other teams in our division have made moves, so we have to make moves just to stay even. Again, it would be nice to make a move to GET AHEAD, but apparently that's just not a Reds mindset. Just stay competitive and "almost there", let's not actually be bold enough to make a REAL move and put ourselves at a competitive advantage.

I think that in a year or two, one of these guys - Frazier, Dorn, Valaika, Cumberland, Stubbs - will be ready to replace Dunn. They won't hit as many home runs as Dunn, but they should have similar OPS. - 757690, July 22, 2008

Alonso will be playing 1B for the REDS and batting 4th one year from today. - Kingspoint, July 9, 2009

That is all pretty much true, but it looks as if the Cardinals move maybe out for a long time. And with so many team in contention in the league there are not gonna be as many players available over the rest of this month.

We are a.500 team most likely. But getting a healthy Volquez back would be similar to a big acquisition as SP. That is a big IF though. And with the way Bailey has pitched of recent that is like another big unexpected acquisition and we could put together a very dangerous rotation 1-4 with a good 5
