    In the top of the third inning, Tom Browning was ejected by home plate umpire Eric Gregg for excessive bench jockeying. Reds catcher Bo Diaz made his final major-league appearance in this game. The Reds headed into the All-Star break with a 44-43 record, but suffered a serious blow at the All-Star skills competition in Anaheim when Barry Larkin tore a ligament in his right elbow and was lost for the rest of the season.
