Overall: 47-39, first place, 6.5 games in front of Indianapolis (PIT).
7/2: The Bats sweep a MAKEUP MADNESS doubleheader from Indy, 2-1 and 3-2. Ramon Ramirez pitched 6.1 strong in Game 1 (W 3-5, 4.50, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HR) and Pedro Viola got the last two for save #5. 1B Kevin Barker and 2B Chris Valaika came through with RBI hits and CF Drew Stubbs showed some signs of breaking his slump with a pair of hits (.276, although he did get immediately picked off first once). Adam Pettyjohn started game two and lasted four innings (5.53, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR) but Jeff Kennard got the victory in relief (3.48, 2 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 K). Robert Manuel picked up save #7. Valaika drove in two more runs with a double and sacrifice fly (.204, 1-for-1, BB); SS Adam Rosales was 2-for-3 with two runs scored (.405). Rehabbin’ Edwin Encarnacion chipped in two singles and a RBI and Stubbs stole three bases (31) despite going just 1-for-2 officially. He also threw out a runner at home plate early in the game.
7/3: Louisville made it three in a row, with 3B Luis Bolivar scoring the game’s only run in the bottom of the first on a throwing error by Indians starter Tom Gorzelanny. Stubbs had two more hits and steal #32 (.282), but it was starter Ben Jukich who excelled the most- he fired seven shutout innings (W 5-4, 5.20, 3 H, 3 BB, 5 K). Jared Burton took care of the eighth, Viola struck out two of the three men he faced in the ninth and Manuel got the last out for save #8.
7/4: Rained out.
7/5: Indy got its revenge, sweeping its own day of MAKEUP MADNESS by the scores of 1-0 and 5-3. Matt Maloney (L 5-5, 2.28, 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) was outdueled by the Indians’ Ian Snell. Zach Stewart threw a scoreless sixth for Louisville, whiffing two. Game two saw the Bats blow a 3-0 lead when the Indians battered All-Star Justin Lehr (L 11-3, 3.43, 4.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HR) for four in the fifth.
7/6: Revenge for the revenge! Louisville discombobulated four Indians pitchers for thirteen hits, two homers, and fourteen (!) walks in a 15-1 rout. Stubbs was 0-for-1 officially, but he drew five walks, scored two runs, and drove in one. (He also got picked off two more times.) Both Barker (2 2B, 2 R, 4 RBI, .253) and RF Darnell McDonald (2B, 3B, 3 R, RBI, .302) had four hits apiece. Valaika chipped in three more (.221); he’s 14-for-30 over his last ten. Rosales hit his fifth homer and Mike Griffin had a pinch-hit solo bomb (#2). Sam Lecure coasted through eight strong for the win (W 7-5, 4.17, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, 1 HR, 108 pitches, 69 strikes) and Viola took care of the high-pressure ninth (4.28).
7/7: Toledo’s Ryan Roberson hit a two-run bomb off Ramon Ramirez in the second inning; that’s all the Mud Hens (DET) would need to nip the Bats, 2-1. Ramon (L 3-6, 4.35, 7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 102 pitches, 68 strikes) was a tough-luck loser. His strikeout rate is way down from 2008 and he’s allowing waaaay more fly balls than ’08, too. That’s why he hasn’t gotten as much of a look this year. Anyway, Kevin Barker carried what little of the Louisville offense there was with three of the club’s six hits, one a solo homer (#15).
7/8: Viola allowed the Mud Hens, down 4-1, to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth- but a pair of grounders held them to one run and got Louisville past Toledo, 4-2. Viola got save #6 for his trouble (4.41, 1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K). Jared Burton (3.00, 1 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) and Zach Stewart (0.00, 1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 K) contributed scorelessness in support of starter Ben Jukich (W 6-4, 4.90, 5.2 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 108 pitches, 73 strikes). Jukich wasn’t fooling a ton of people and had to wriggle out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the first inning- but he got it done. Louisville got all four of his runs in the third inning- all with two outs. Stubbs scratched an infield single and scored on McDonald’s triple. Heisey (.333, 3-for-4) doubled in McDonald. Barker singled in Heisey. Finally, Adam Rosales capped the inning by knocking in Barker (who’d alertly taken second on the throw home on the previous play) with a base hit. Stubbs, McDonald, and Barker each finished with a pair of hits apiece.
Moves & Notes: (7/3) Rehabbin’ Edwin Encarnacion finished his long rehab assignment and headed back to Cincinnati- he was replaced by UT Mike Griffin, back from Carolina. (7/7) RHR Robert Manuel made his first trip to the big leagues, with the Reds demoting INF Drew Sutton to take his place. RHP Kip Wells was signed as a free agent and placed on the reserve (inactive) list.
Ex-Reds Notes: C Dane Sardinha was outrighted to the minors by Detroit for probably the 1,454th time. LHP Bruce Chen was added to the 40-man by Kansas City- looks like he’s getting another look after a couple of years out of the bigs. Milwaukee recalled RHR Mike Burns. The Mets released OF Wily Mo Pena (Japan calls). They also added RHR Elmer Dessens to their 40-man. Carlos Guevara went on the 7-day DL in San Diego’s system. Seattle DL’ed RHS Josh Hall.
AA Carolina

Overall: 5-11, second half. 42-43 for the season.
7/2: Chattanooga (LAD) got to Jordan Smith for three in the first, but he settled down after that (W 5-3, 3.44, 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) and the Mudcats got homers from Todd Frazier (#8) and SS Zach Cozart (#9) as well as a RBI triple from CF Sean Henry to erase the deficit and come back to win, 4-3. Both homers came off former Red Travis Chick, who seems eternally in Double-A like some 95-throwing version of Dennis the Menace. Phil Valiquette whiffed four of six in relief of Smith (3.77), Sean Watson got through the eighth (4.53, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) , and Logan Ondrusek notched save #3 (1.75, 1 H). 1B Logan Parker had a pair of doubles (.231). After the game, Smith went back on the seven-day DL.
7/3: Travis Wood departs after six solid innings of a 2-2 tie (1.37, 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 93 pitches, 59 strikes) but the Lookouts got to Ruben Medina (L 1-4, 4.20, 1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) for two in the bottom of the seventh then survived a comeback attempt in the ninth to hang on, 4-3. The Mudcats almost tied the game after LF Carson Kainer singled in Frazier with one out, but C Korey Feiner and pinch-hitter Jerry Gil both struck out to end the game. Not sure why it was Gil used as a PH over the other options on the Mudcat bench. Anyway, Frazier was 2-for-4 with two runs scored as well as his 31st double of the year (.318).
7/4: Camilo Vazquez did very well in a spot start (5.11, 5 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 7 K), leaving ahead 1-0, but the Mudcat bullpen imploded and Tennessee (CHC) rallied for a 7-4 win. Ramon Geronimo gave up one run in the sixth (5.02), then Gil (10.13, 0.1 IP, 1 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K), Valiquette (4.80, 0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3-3 IRS) and Chris Kelly (7.36, 2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER) were pounded for five in the seventh and one in the eighth. Kainer lashed three singles (.333), Cozart was 2-for-3 with a RBI (.290, steal #7), and C Brian Peterson was 2-for-3 with a run and RBI (.333).
7/5: All the Craftiness that Tom Cochran could muster (L 1-2, 4.21, 4 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) couldn’t save the Mudcats from being outhit 13-3 in a 6-0 shutout loss. Solid relief work from Kelly (5.79, 1 IP, 1 K), Watson (4.34, 2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K) and Medina (4.01, 2 IP, 2 H, 1 K).
7/6: Matt Klinker, returning from Sarasota after a logjam and some time on the DL, fired six shutout innings (W 2-0, 1.50, 1 BB, 7 K) to lead Carolina to an easy 8-1 win. Jerry Gil handled the seventh and eighth (8.53) but Ondrusek blew the shutout in the ninth (2.03, 1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB). 3B Juan Francisco slammed a three-run homer (#14) and went 3-for-4 (.260). Peterson hit an eighth-inning grand slam, his first, to blow out a 4-1 game (2-for-4, .368).
7/7: Lefty Lee Tabor, strictly a reliever in his two years in the organization, threw six shutout innings in a spot start in just 69 pitches (W 1-1, 3.78, 4 H, 2 BB, 3 K) as Carolina blanked the Smokies, 6-0. Valiquette (4.50, 1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 K) and Geronimo (4.76, 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) finished up. Francisco homered again (#15, 2-for-3, BB, .264) and Parker doubled in a run and walked twice (.240).
7/8: Off.
Moves & Notes: (7/3) RHS Jordan Smith DLed for the third time this year with an elbow strain, making it five pitchers on the Carolina DL (Avery, Buck, Lutz, Smit, and now Smith again- they join Cs Chris Kroski and Chris Denove as well as Yonder Alonso). UT Mike Griffin went back up to Louisville. RHS Matt Klinker returned to Carolina from Sarasota and 1B-OF Stephen Chapman moved up despite being promoted to High-A just a short time ago (and going 3-for-30 there).

Overall: 5-7, second half. 33-47 overall.
7/2: Tampa (NYY) spanked Scott Carroll (L 1-2, 4.43, 5.1 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 HR) and the Reds, 8-3, in game one of a MAKEUP MADNESS doubleheader. 3B Neftali Soto smacked a pair of hits and drove in two (.260). Game two was more of the same, 5-2, although most of the runs off Luis Montano (L 5-8, 5.31, 4.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR) were unearned. CF Denis Phipps got two hits and a RBI (.275) while 3B Jose Gualdron hit his first FSL homer.
7/3: Led by the newly promoted Dave Sappelt (4-for-5, 2 R, RBI, 2 SB), the Reds lashed 14 hits and beat St. Lucie (NYM), 6-2. Soto, playing 1B this time, chipped in two more hits and a RBI, while Justin Reed scored twice and stole a base (#13) from the leadoff slot. Jeremy Horst went five (W 4-8, 3.35, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 2 K) and three relievers prevented a Mets comeback.
7/4: Again the Reds win, 4-1, behind Sappelt (HR #1, 2-for-3, BB, steal #3), Soto (HR #9) and some good pitching. Rafael Gonzalez started (3.88, 5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 HR) but Josh Beal got the W in relief (W 1-0, 2.63, 3 IP, 2 H, 3 K) and Justin Freeman save #1 (4.83, 1 IP, 1 K). Gualdron also added a pair of hits to push his FSL average to .355 and C Devin Mesoraco was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored (.205).
7/5: Charlotte (TB) let some air out of the Sarasota sails, beating the Reds 5-2. Travis Webb started well enough (3.74, 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 5 K) but the Stonecrabs got to Mark Pawelek (L 0-1, 9.00, 1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 K, 2 WP, HB) for the deciding runs in the seventh. Again Soto had two hits and a RBI (.263).
7/6: Again it was the seventh- this time two runs scored off Justin Freeman (L 0-3, 5.18, BS #2, 1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB) that proved fateful for the Reds. They lose this one as well, 6-5. Luis Montano lasted just two (5.58, 3 H, 3 ER) but Steve Otterness (4.50, 3 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 HR) held down the fort while Sarasota rebounded to take a 5-4 lead after 6. Mesoraco was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs (.216), Reed added two singles, a walk, steal #14, and two runs scored (.233) and newly imported SS Shane Carlson was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
7/7: The ‘Crabs swept the series with an unearned run off Josh Beal (L 1-1, 2.49, 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 K) in the bottom of the 12th inning, 2-1. Carroll went six shutout innings (3.42, 5 H, 1 BB, 1 K) and Joe Krebs 1.1 (2.06, 1 H, 1 BB), but Charlotte scored the tying run in the ninth off nominal closer Enerio Del Rosario (2.22, BS #2, 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER). Phipps, DH Jason Bour, and Carlson each had a pair of hits.
7/8: Jeremy Horst (W 5-8, 3.15, 5.2 IP, 4 H, 4 BB, 4 K), Joe Krebs (2.00, 1.1 IP, 2 H) and Josh Beal (2.30, 2 IP, 1 BB) combined on a six-hit shutout of first-half champions Fort Myers, 5-0. Jeremy Reed smacked two singles and a triple (.234, RBI), Denis Phipps doubled twice and scored a run (.272), and Neftali Soto knocked in two more.
Moves & Notes: (7/2) OF Keltavious Jones went back on the DL, retroactive to 6/29, for something having to do with his stomach. He had surgery of some kind, I believe? Anyway, he’d missed almost the entire season. (7/3) SS Shane Carlson, a 2009 college draftee who started at Billings, was brought up. SS Mariekson Gregorius, 19, was sent back to Billings after acquitting himself decently at the higher level. OF Dave Sappelt promoted from Dayton. RHS Matt Klinker and 1B-OF Stephen Chapman went up to Carolina. (7/4) LHR Steve Otterness continued pinballing around the organization, coming up to Sarasota from Dayton. (7/7) 2B Alex Buchholz activated from the DL and sent to the GCL squad for a short rehab assignment.

Record This Week: 2-5.
Overall: Second half: 5-8. Overall 33-50.
7/2: Fort Wayne (SD) beat the Dragons for what seems like the thousandth time this year, 3-1. Lance Janke (L 4-4, 3.55, 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR) took the loss. Steve Otterness pitched three innings of scoreless relief (2.45). DH Kevin Coddington was the only Dayton hitter with more than one (.310, 2-for-4). 1B Kyle Day doubled Coddington in with the only Dragons run.
7/3: Dragons held to four hits and lose to the TinCaps again, 5-3. Matt Fairel (L 5-4, 3.11, 5 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 HR) started and lost.
7/4: Four errors help cause another loss, 5-1, to West Michigan (DET). RF Andrew Means’ solo homer, #2, was the only Dayton run. 3B Kevyn Feiner made three of the four miscues (he is still hitting .310). Curt Partch turned in a quality start but got the L (4-7, 5.47, 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K). LF Byron Wiley was 2-for-3 (.245, also steal #4).
7/5: Oh my goodness. The Whitecaps scored 13 runs in the first inning as starter JC Sulbaran was gone after six batters (L 2-2, 5.36, 0 IP, 2 H, 6 ER, 4 BB) and Drew Bowman (5.56, 0.2 IP, 4 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 1 K) didn’t make it through the frame either. Still, there was some fun still to be had- Dayton got as close as 13-9 as Byron Wiley homered in each of his first three at-bats (#6-7-8, 6 RBI) and Means was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a RBI, two steals (15) and a pair of HBPs (.266). CF Josh Fellhauer also got his first two pro hits and first two pro RBI (.200). 1B Kyle Day hit a pinch-hit homer (#4) in the top of the eighth to cap the Dragons scoring at eleven runs. West Michigan takes this baseball-game-in-football-clothing, 20-11. Lefty Ezequiel Infante, just promoted from Billings, actually managed to turn in 2.2 scoreless innings in the midst of all this (although he did allow both his inherited runners to score).
7/6: The Dragons stopped their losing streak by scoring three in the top of the ninth to beat the Whitecaps, 4-2! LF Tony Brown singled home Cody Puckett to tie the game, then Feiner and Fellhauer followed with RBI hits (and in Josh’s case, followed it with his first pro stolen base) to provide the margin. Wiley homered early on- his fourth in two games and ninth overall. He’s up to .257 thanks to a .395 stretch in his last ten. Apparently, Joey Votto’s rehab visit did him wonders. Feiner, who played LF, was 3-for-4 (.314). Oscar Castro pitched six good innings (6.13, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K) but the win went to Scott Gaffney (W 4-3, 3.06, 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K). Aguido Gonzalez got save #9 (3.00).
7/7: Whitecaps get their revenge, scoring the deciding run in the bottom of the seventh off Jordan Hotchkiss (L 0-3, 3.76, 2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) to win it, 5-4. Janke started (3.74, 6 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K). SS Miguel Rojas was 3-for-4 with three RBI (.246, steal #8). LF Tony Brown doubled twice, scored one, and drove one in (.254). Wiley was 1-for-3 with a walk.
7/8: Matt Fairel was much more ACE-like, scattering seven hits over 6.2 innings (W 6-4, 2.98, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) in Dayton’s 6-1 win over Clinton (SEA). Scott Gaffney finished for save #4 (2.87, 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K). Again it was Byron Wiley leading the offensive attack- he was 3-for-4 with a walk (.268). Means had two hits and two RBI (.271). Coddington had two hits and two runs scored (.300) and even stole third base (!). Rojas had two hits and a RBI to reach .250. Fellhauer had two hits and two runs scored (.200).
Moves & Notes: (7/3) OF Josh Fellhauer, a 7th-round pick out of Cal-State Fullerton this year, was the only ’09 draftee assigned directly to a full-season squad. He replaced the promoted Dave Sappelt. (7/4) LHR Ezequiel Infante up from Billings, replacing the promoted Steve Otterness.
C Kevin Coddington and RHS Josh Ravin were named Dragons of the Month for June.

Overall: 4-11.
7/2: Two in the top of the ninth for Helena (MIL) beat the Mustangs, 5-4. Four errors for the good guys didn’t help; the losing pitcher, Donnie Joseph (L 0-1, 2.25, 1 IP,0 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 2 WP) didn’t even give up a hit. Lefty Justin Walker started and went five solid (2.77, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K) and Daniel Corcino dominated for two, striking out five of six (4.50). DH Yen-Wen Kuo was 3-for-4 (.440, steal #1) and C Humberto Sosa drove in three with a double and triple (.355).
7/3: Another one-run loss, 6-5. The Mustangs got CF Alexis Oliveras on base to start the ninth after a two-base error, but he was thrown out trying to score on a sacrifice bunt. Kuo then struck out to end the game. (He did drive in a pair of runs and steal a base earlier on.) Sosa had two more hits and a run scored (.371) and so did LF Josh Garton (.188). Leo Astorga started and struggled (4.50, 3 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K). Sixth-round pick Mark Serrano debuted with two scoreless innings (1 BB, 3 K). Hector Santana took the loss in relief (L 0-1, 4.50, 2 IP, 0 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) thanks to some wild pitches, a hit batter, and a double steal. Fourth-rounder C Mark Fleury, DHing here, was 1-for-3 with a walk, RBI, and run scored.
7/4: Missoula (ARI) came back from a 2-0 deficit to win, 3-2, and drop the Mustangs to 2-10. Shea Snowden had his best start of the year to date (5.40, 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K). James Walczak took the loss (L 0-2, 10.38, 1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB). Bruce Pearl struck out six in 2.2 innings of scoreless relief (0.00). SS Mariekson Gregorius, down from Sarasota, was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base in his ’09 Billings debut. Oliveras was 2-for-4 with two RBI (.269).
7/5: MUSTANGS WIN! They survived a four-run rally in the top of the ninth to clip the Osprey, 8-7. Adian Kummet got the save by retiring the only man he faced to bail out Corcino (9.53, 1.2 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 2 BB). Luca Panerati got the victory (W 1-1, 7.50, 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR), improving again from his previous start. Donnie Joseph pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh (1.50). Kuo was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored (.395) and Garton was 2-for-3 (.237).
7/6: Off.
7/7: Again Billings piled up a huge lead and again they almost blow it, hanging on to beat Orem (LAA) 8-7. Again Kummet got the save (#2, 6.75, 1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB). Starter Tim Crabbe went three (3.00, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) so it was lefty Bryan Gardner who got the win (1-0, 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K). Oliveras launched a three-run homer in the fourth (#1) and finished 3-for-5 with steal #5 (.300). Gregorius and RF Sean Conner each had two hits.
7/8: The Owlz got their revenge, pounding the Mustangz 10-1. Billings actually got twelve hits, but they stranded ten runners and hit into a pair of double plays. Justin Walker started and lost (L 0-2, 4.41, 3.1 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 3 K). Righty Forrest Cannon relieved him and pitched 2.2 scoreless (even stranding the two runners he inherited). Gregorius poked four singles in five trips from the leadoff slot, driving in the lone Mustangs run and stealing base #2.
Moves & Notes: (7/3) 1B Tom Nurre (38th round, out of St. X/Miami) added to the roster. LHP Brandon Rice sent to extended spring training. SS Mariekson Gregorius added from Sarasota and SS Shane Carlson sent to Sarasota. (7/4) LHR Ezequiel Infante promoted to Dayton. 7/2: Rained out.
7/3: Orioles win easy, 8-1. Just three hits for the Reds. Two of those were by 2B Jefry Sierra, who hit a combined .176 last year in two levels of the DSL. Blair Carson started and lost (0-1, 4 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K). Chase Ware threw four innings of relief and gave up four more runs. Matteo Pizziconi pitched a 1-2-3 ninth (0.00).
7/4: Red Sox sweep a MAKEUP MADNESS day, 2-0 and 5-2. Reds got just one hit in the first game (thanks, NDFA 3B Danny Hernandez). DH Ryan Doran, son of former big-leaguer Bill and Cincinnati native, stole a pair of bases despite not getting a hit (he did walk, though). Pedro Villareal gave up his first earned run of ’09 while getting the loss (L 0-1, 3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K). Mike Henry started and lost the afternoon-cap (0-1, 7.71, 3 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER). Four hits for the Reds in that one.
7/5: Three runs in the seventh, one on a RBI triple by Juan Duran, snap a scoreless tie and push the Reds over the Twins to victory, 3-0. SS Henry Rodriguez added two hits, a RBI, and a run scored. 7/7: MAKEUP MADNESS TOOT TOOT sees the Reds sweep the Rays, 3-1 and 4-2! They took the first game by tying the score at one in the seventh on Duran’s double (his second hit of 2009) and then putting up a pair in the top of the eighth on a Hamilton RBI single (.263, 2-for-4, steals #8 and #9) and a Cristobal Rodriguez sac-fly. Nathan Driessen got the win (W 1-0, 3.24, 2 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) in relief of Tzu-Kai Chiu (0.00, 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K). Save #2 for Raul Rodriguez. The “nightcap” (afternoon-cap?) saw Cristobal double in a run in a four-run fourth that gave the Reds all the runs they needed. C Danny Vicioso also doubled one in. Harold Johnson started and went two (1 ER), Ramon Rodriguez went two in his US debut for the win, and Chase Ware finished up (save #1, 8.10, 3 IP, 4 H, 1 ER).
7/8: Four straight wins! The Reds spanked the Orioles, 6-1, behind Carson (W 1-1, 2.25, 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K), Duran (2-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 2B, 2 R), Jesus Adames (save #1, 4 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) and C Yovan Gonzalez (2-for-3, 2 RBI).
