    10. Will anyone pitch a no-hitter?

Although there have been several impressive pitching performances this year (witness Jarrod Washburn's one-hitter on Monday night) and a handful of pitchers have flirted with no-nos, there has still not been a no-hitter this season. Insignificant you say? Well, yes, but historically intriguing just the same. There has been at least one no-hitter in 17 of the past 19 years. If history is any guide, the year's first no-no may come from a most unlikely source. The last time a season went this long without a no-hitter in a year in which one was eventually pitched came in 2006 when Florida rookie Anibal Sanchez did it in just his 14th career start. Sanchez's no-hitter ended the longest drought between no-nos in baseball history.

Re: Jonathan Sanchez throws a no-hitter

    Congratulations to Mr. Sanchez.

Excuse me if I cannot get too excited about the whole thing. Back in my day the Dodgers and Giants were the enemy. The Reds fought them so many times and they have just been a pain over the years. I wish nothing but bad on these west coast teams. Of course, the younger among us will never understand while they worry over the Cubs, Cardinals, and Brewers, who either did not exist or were in a different division years ago.

Daggone, I just realized I have become my father. Sobering. Never mind...

There are a few guys who pitched a no hitter that would’ve been a perfecto if not for an error. They are:

Terry Hullholland (August 15, 1990 …against the Giants)
Jerry Reuss (June 27, 1980 …against the Giants)
    Dick Bosman (July 19, 1974 …against A’s)
    Bill McCahan (September 2, 1947 …for A’s, against Senators)
Walter Johnson (July 1, 1920 …against Red Sox)
Nap Rucker (September 5, 1908 …for Dodgers, against Braves [then known as the Doves])
Christy Matthewson (June 13, 1905 …for Giants, against Cubs)

I was just looking that up...it's happened more often than I would have guessed I suspect Juan Uribe felt a bit down over the whole thing. Congrats on a fine performance to Mr. Sanchez. I just watched the 9th on MLB.tv and though it was wonderful to see his father there.

For fun...can you name the team (without looking) that has the longest streak without being "no-hit?" And for bonus kudos, the team with the 2nd longest streak without being "no-hit?"

Edit - Nevermind, I forgot the Yankees were no-hit by the Astros in 2003.

I wanna say the Reds and Cubs...

    Correct!

Cubs have the longest streak, Reds 2nd longest!
