    Bruce out 6-8 weeks

    Reds Twitter http://twitter.com/CincinnatiReds

Bruce's MRI last night showed no tendon or ligament damage in his right wrist. He'll be re-examined Thursday & is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

what a blow to the team. Losing him, even if he was struggling means more Taveras. Across the board hit.

I hope Dickerson shows Dusty enough to actually play him in center more but I seriously doubt it.

    6-8 weeks. Wow.

Reality just kinda smacked us in the face. Road trip left us at 3 games under and 5th in the division....we lose Bruce for 2 months..these things, combined with all our other problems effectively end our season. Oh well...I cared longer this year than I have in the last decade. I wonder where we would be right now if Jockerty never signed Tavares and we didn't have all the injury problems we had. What if..

Bruce being out doesn't hurt that much. The way he has been going it probably helps our chances more then anything.Either way the season is still pretty much over.

This is going to be the biggest problemo. IF they don't get a Big Bat (I'm putting % at less than 33% chance, even if they make a move - which they will, unless Rosales is it - chances are it won't be a BIG BAT, just more fodder/fluff) Taveras sees the field more.

HOPEFULLY they continue to give Dickerson the leadoff job and Taveras bats 2nd. He actually hasn't done too bad there, of course small sample size and all but he's had a couple 3 hit games. I don't think leading off/following the pitcher is where he needs to be.
Seriously the fact that he can bunt makes him a good #2 guy, with a real leadoff caliber player in front of him.

What we need is someone to take over LF and the Cleanup spot. We still need someone who can hit RHP better than BP and EE, so maybe they can expand their search for an OF bat to include Lefties, so we could actually have BP hit 5th or 6th now.
Nix and Gomes are Plumeeting back to earth.
    July:
    Nix is 4 for 24; 1 HR, 2 RBI, 7 K, and .167 .200 .333 .533
    Gomes is 4 for 19; 1 HR, 1 RBI, 8 K, and .211 .286 .421 .707

Time to end the mirage that is "our LF platoon is .900 OPS+" so we don't need a Matt Holiday.

    GET A BIG BAT!!

    versus RHP:

    Dickerson, RF
    Taveras, CF
    Votto
    BIG BAT, LF
    BP
    EE
    Catcher
    SS

    This is actually somewhat formidable.

    versus LHP:

Taveras, CF (not my choice, but you know it's happening)
    Votto
    BIG BAT, LF
    BP
    EE
    Gomes/Dickerson, RF
    Catcher
    SS

Of course in this situation, the DUHster will put JHJ in at SS and bat him 2nd, but he shouldn't.

I think this could still keep us within earshot of sniffing the Central. Until St. Louis and Milwaukee make moves that is. Then we should be looking to make a move to upgrade one or more of SS/CF/3B/SP/BP in that order.
    We shall see.

    PEACE

    -BLEEDS
I think that in a year or two, one of these guys - Frazier, Dorn, Valaika, Cumberland, Stubbs - will be ready to replace Dunn. They won't hit as many home runs as Dunn, but they should have similar OPS. - 757690, July 22, 2008

Alonso will be playing 1B for the REDS and batting 4th one year from today. - Kingspoint, July 9, 2009

I'm not sure if the wins and losses this season is the biggest loss out of this. I think Bruce losing development time is the big issue. Hopfully, he can spend the time studying tape and come to some conclusing of how he needs to change his approach to hitting at the big league level.
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

How will we ever replace Bruce's bat?

Oh wait... They already called up Rosales, nevermind...

I hate to see anyone get hurt. Ever. Just bad Karma to be happy about that. But if there is a silver lining it's this: he doesn't seem to have done any lingering damage, it gives him the chance to sit and watch every game with Dusty, and it's not like we are losing any offense.

Jay was hitting .208. I think we all agree that he has done all he can do in AAA. So maybe just relaxing and observing from the best seat in the house will help him mature as a hitter. We know he will be back in plenty of time for next year, and he could conceivably come back at the end of the season just to get some "at bats".

It also forces Joketty's hand a bit to try and make a trade, something we have all been wanting. Taveras just doesn't get the job done, and the Nix/Gomes platoon has shown that neither is ready to be a full time starter.

So we either bring up Stubbs and give him a chance early, or we go out and aquire a decent everyday outfielder. Or we can try Votto or Edwin in the outfield and get Rolen.

No matter what happens, I agree this season is most likely not going to produce a pennant, so lets do the next best thing and give others a chance.
