Studio 60 and Sportsnight both seemed to fall into the same trap of "Oh crap we're a really critically well received show, but we can't get audiences to like us, so they couldn't decide whether to go highbrow or try to gain a bigger audience."
My wife bought the Studio 60 DVD and its remarkable how good the first 4 or 5 episodes were, but its like they knew they weren't long for the world.
Also, what was shocking was how much Studio 60 just tore apart NBC and Saturday Night Live.
So let's see, you're unbelievably expensive to make, you get a weak audience and you insult the network.
CANCELLED.
I agree with 2 that a lot of other people posted:
Sports Night (If you have never seen this series I highly recommend the DVD box set with contains both seasons.)
Arrested Development
Another show I enjoyed that did not last too long was The Job which was a Dennis Leary series he did before Rescue Me about New York City cops. That was a very funny series.
WOY-- Not sure why, but I wouldn't have guessed that one coming from you...
My So Called Life was sort of a guilty pleasure for me.....they took "teen angst" to new and almost ridiculous levels. I do think it was a good show and better than the majority of the stuff on the tube....and props to the casting department that found Claire Daines and Jared Leto. I wouldn't say either of them are award-worthy actors, but definitely a cut above what you normally find on those types of shows.
Get a Life
Dear John
Greg the Bunny
Lucky Louie
Little Britain USA
It wasn't cancelled technically, but Chappelles Show..
Firefly
Arrested Development
Pushing Daisies
Andy Barker, P.I.
Andy Richter Controls the Universe
Police Squad!
Sports Night
Space: Above and Beyond
I love that Police Squad has gotten mentioned multiple times. I was going to mention it but figured nobody would remember. The gunfight scenes from behind two trash cans 10 yards apart from each other, and the police car going through living rooms during the opening credits are priceless.
The Andy Milonakis Show
Help stamp out, eliminate, and do away with redundancy.
No, no, no...I was afraid someone would mention this one
I love creative and off-the-wall humor. I'm all for pushing the limits and being un-PC. However, there is a fine line between creative/original and just plan weird and stupid. I found Milonakis to be a total Tom Green copycat. And the thing about the Tom Greens of the world is that once you've gotten your shock value a few times, you realize there really isn't any talent there and you get bored.
Kinda like Jackass...I found the show strangely entertaining for the first 3-4 episodes because I was pretty awe-struck at what they'd do to themselves and each other. But it became a played-out bore real fast.
Just my .02
