Who's best at leading off this year?

When leading off an inning in 2009:

    The glorious:
    Hanigan: .400/.489/.500/.989
    Votto: .368/.400/.816/1.216

    The great:
    Dickerson: .373/.407/.471/.878

    The good:
    Phillips: .241/.353/.397/.749

    The not-so-good:
    Hernandez: .254/.329/.333/.662

    The ugly:
    Taveras: .264/.298/.320/.618
    Hairston: .250/.305/.421/.726
    Nix: .218/.283/.509/.792
    Bruce: .169/.239/.354/.593

    The your-career-is-over:
    Gonzalez: .159/.178/.205/.382

All of these players have 40+ at-bats in this area. The other players have 20 or less so I didn't list them.

Nix has almost an .800 OPS leading off-- how is that "ugly," especially considering Phillips' .749 is in the "good" category?

Note that Hairston's .726 is almost at .749 as well...

    Because of his OBP.

.283 OBP for Nix when leading off is ugly. That is the job of the guy who leads off an inning....get on base.

Then why even include SLG and OPS in the opening post?

I didn't see GIDP's post when I did mine, or I wouldn't have posted it. Wasn't trying to rub anything in.

But, to answer your question, because someone might want to know, and it tells you also if they are adding extra-base hits to their plate appearances in those situations.
