I think as things stand now you ought not take the job but might you be interested in negotiating? Getting hired is a two way street. Would there be a salary that would make it worthwhile? Maybe get a guarantee that no weekends would be involved? You obviously were interested enough to go through two interviews.

I'd say that's a decent approach assuming there is a dollar amount that would make it worth your while. I mean heck it sounds like you have some nice leverage here, call 'em and tell 'em hey give me this amount and I'll take it otherwise..

Personally though I just went through the same thing. I was off for over a year and fortunately had enough stashed away to get me by. However I didn't have the leverage you have and have recently got back to work in a new field, which I am not fond of and have a 35-40 minute ride both ways as well. I had no choice but now being here at the new job for about 3 weeks now it's not too bad I have managed to cut my commute to about 25-30 minutes with a couple of shortcuts I have learned. The job isn't ideal but it could be worse and there may be more upside to it than I first thought.

All that said if I'd had that leverage I would have used it and took my chances. No amount of money is worth your health and happiness and usually the latter has an impact on the former. OTOH the job may not be as bad as it appears, maybe the temp has a better opportunity in the near future, maybe he's moving to another state, maybe he has a rich 'ole gal ready to take care of him. Hard to say but up the ante and if it works fine if not move on.

Oh and BTW it's kind of hard to look for work when you have little or no time to do so.
