Thanks Mario, do you know when the deadline was, for some reason I thought we had missed it, but then he had signed, so I guess not. I was asking as I am in a discussion about another player and whether or not he will be going pro or NCAA, and the deadline is the holdup peope agree on.

He couldn't sign after the "deadline" or it wouldn't be much of a deadline, would it?

Reds Sign Yonder Alonso, Yorman Rodriguez
By Tim Dierkes [August 15, 2008 at 11:30pm CST]
11:30pm: The Reds also inked Venezuelan outfielder Yorman Rodriguez, according to a press release.

11:09pm: MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan says Alonso signed for $4.5MM. John Manuel adds details: "$2MM bonus, $4.55MM guarantee" on a Major League deal.

10:40pm: Baseball America's Jim Callis says the Reds have signed Alonso, most likely to a big league deal. Terms are not yet known.

6:09pm: According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Reds GM Walt Jocketty has made his final offer to first-round pick Yonder Alonso. Jocketty says Alonso backed down slightly for the first time today, so there is hope.
The Reds signed both Alonso and Yorman Rodriguez on 8/15. In time that may become a local holiday in the Tri-State area.

I think what you might be referring to is the grievance that was filed in the signing of Pedro Alvarez with the Pirates and the question of the timing of his signing (also a deadline deal). As I recall, there was a question of whether Alonso could have fallen into the same question. I don't recall how the grievance was ever worked out. It did work out though because he's showing the Pirates system.

We can't trade Alonso though until after August 15th, something that others point out when folks say we should move him in a trade.

Thanks, i think that was what I was thinking of, seemed there was something not so cut and dry with Alonso's signing, but I couldnt recall. I am in another converstaion about Tate, who is signed to play football at UNC next year but was also drafted and hasnt signed with the Pad's yet, and what will/could happen as deadline apporaches.

Well, yes, I should have stated that more clearly. Although there may be some hitch about him being on the DL too. Regardless, I prefer they not trade Alonso and see what develops with him and Votto.
