What a great pickup Vander Wal was for the Reds. Spectacular.
I remember, they even had a press conference to announce his signing, if I am not mistaken. You know your team has hit rock bottom when that guy is your big off-season acquisition.

If I remember correctly, he messed up his knee shoveling his sidewalk a few weeks after signing with the Reds, and didn't play until right around the All-Star Break.

Remember how we were told how great it was going to be when he got healthy?

I wonder just how many players who get hurt in the off season make up their story as to how they got hurt?? I'm not saying Vander Wal did this, but their are alotta fishy injuries players seem to get in the offseason or even in the regular season for that matter.

I don't know, but I'm willing to buy this one. He was 38 years old that season--the age at which some bodies start to show some wear and tear. I could see him suffering a major injury doing something (like shoveling snow) that a few years ago might have only caused a couple of days of soreness.
