    Pedro Viola called up

Per team press notes. Danny Richar goes to the 60 day DL to make room. Didn't see that one coming.

Atlanta has a bunch of lefties in it's lineup. And Rhodes and Herrera have been used quite a bit and are showing it.

    Re: Pedro Viola called up

Viola has continued to miss bats this year, but his walk rate is through the roof. What's the story there?
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

    Re: Pedro Viola called up

They thought it was Frank Viola, bringing him back for a September publicity stunt to increase attendance. Now they really have egg on their face because they will be on the road after today and the team they are playing is in a pennant race.

Viola has nasty, nasty stuff but his control is very inconsistent. When he's on, he's dominant and when he's not, he's very bad. He could be a dominant lefty out of the pen if he ever puts it together.

Good move. They've got plenty of LHs below Louisville they could promote to help for the playoffs (Krebs, Thurman to name two). The Reds pen needs help right now, and a lefty makes the most sense. Viola's mega-inconsistent, but he's been throwing well lately.

Seems like a "let's throw it against the wall and see if it sticks" move.

    Viola deserved the call-up, however.

Let's see what he can do.

...maybe b/c he got his brains beat in a little bit @ AA and AAA?

@ age 26, however, this is a "let's see what he can do/throw it against the wall" move...

Isn't that what Sept 1 roster expansion is for?

Love this move.. Pedro is definatly one of the prospects I'm rooting for and if used right sould be a factor for this club for years to come. I'll wait paitently for Louisville to finish up to see Francisco, Frazier, and Wood...

Yet your other statement in the first post said he deserved the call-up. So is it a promotion of a guy who deserved it, or a "lets throw it against the wall" type move?

I don't see how it can be moth - he either deserved it, or it's out of desperation.

    Maybe I'm misreading something.

    Re: Pedro Viola called up

Maybe he doesn't "deserve" it but he is 26 and probably has to go on the 40-man next year, so the Reds better find out if he sinks or swims...Right? Not to mention that he has a left arm and the Reds could use that kind of help this month.
