I hadn't attended a Reds game since Riverfront days until the recent Dodgers series at home. Here's a few random observations of my first visit to Great American Ball Park..........
SEATS - Sat in 429 on Saturday, and 133 on Sunday. Both sections were great seats, excellent sightlines, and comfortable chairs. Seats were easy to find, and the ushers were helpful, but not pushy. I am a beefy guy, but the seats were sufficiently roomy and comfortable.
VIEWS - I can understand some of the criticism I've read about GABP in that you can (kinda) see downtown Cincinnati's skyline, and you can (kinda) see the River, but in most seats you can't see either one really great.
INTERIOR - Very roomy concourses, and plenty of food and beverage options. Restrooms were clean, and plentiful and Marty was on with PBP while you took care of things.
CONCESSIONS - I was really stoked about having my first Skyline coney, and was disappointed...it was basically a Vienna sausage on a bun with some chili and 2 lbs. of shredded cheese on top. I did, however, discover LaRosa's Pizza, and it was AMAZING ! I am hooked now. Also had UDF ice cream in a helmet, which I hadn't had since I was a kid. Beer was pricey but I know that's not exclusive to GABP.
AESTHETICS - Good, but not great.....lots of plain concrete and white steel. More brick would have been nice, and given the place a less generic vibe. Crosley Terrace is a nice, Reds-y touch, but the main gate entrance on Joe Nuxhall Way was less than overwhelming. I have mixed feelings about the Powerstacks - on one hand, kind of kitschy and hokey, but I still loved it when the fireworks went off after a Redlegs home run.
MISCELLANY - The scoreboard was impressive. FanZone was not - just some assorted wii games. WTH ? I didn't have a chance to visit the Reds HOF, but I will next trip. And, both days, I never once saw Rosie, Mr. Red, Mr. Redlegs, or Gapper. None of them ! and I wanted to get pictures.
I'll give it a grade of B for now (until I visit what is claimed to be the best park in MLB, Pittsburgh's PNC Park). Once the game starts, it's great, but I guess the main gripe is the exterior is rather bland, and they didn't really make full use of either the downtown view or the River view.
BTW....you know how we're 12-2 in the last 14 games ? The (2) is the two games I attended.
