The Official 'Who Do We Protect from the Rule Five Draft?' Thread

At the moment, the Reds have 44 players on the 40-man roster (four of which are on the 60-day DL). Therefore, at least four of the existing players will need to be cut/non-tendered following the season. If you'd like to protect someone from the 40-man roster, you'd have to cut/non-tender an additional person.

Here are the players under contract for 2010:
    Bronson Arroyo
    Homer Bailey
    Francisco Cordero
    Johnny Cueto
    Carlos Fisher
    Aaron Harang
    Daniel Ray Herrera
    Sam LeCure
    Mike Lincoln
    Matt Maloney
    Ramon Ramirez
    Arthur Rhodes
    Daryl Thompson
    Pedro Viola
    Edinson Volquez
    Wilkin Castillo
    Ryan Hanigan
    Craig Tatum
    Yonder Alonso
    Kevin Barker
    Juan Francisco
    Paul Janish
    Brandon Phillips
    Danny Richar
    Scott Rolen
    Adam Rosales
    Drew Sutton
    Joey Votto
    Wladimir Balentien
    Jay Bruce
    Chris Dickerson
    Darnell McDonald
    Drew Stubbs
    Willy Taveras

Would need to be offered arbitration/contract extension:
    Bill Bray
    Jared Burton
    Justin Lehr
    Nick Masset
    Micah Owings
    Kip Wells
    Ramon Hernandez
    Corky Miller
    Jonny Gomes
    Laynce Nix

    Players to consider protecting:
    SP
    Luis Montano
    Oscar Castro
    Leo Astorga
    Jordan Smith
    Luis Machuca
    James Avery
    Dallas Buck
    Ben Jukich
    Travis Wood
    Tom Cochran
    Alex Smit
    Travis Webb

    RP
    Enerio Del Rosario
    Sean Watson
    Ruben Medina
    Logan Ondrusek
    Federico Baez
    Greg Atencio
    Jeff Kennard
    Derrik Lutz
    Ben Davis
    Lee Tabor
    Phil Valiquette

    C
    Chris Denove

    INF
    Wes Bankston
    Logan Parker
    Kris Negron
    Miguel Rojas
    Chris Valaika

    OF
    Chris Heisey
    Sean Henry
    Danny Dorn
    Shaun Cumberland
    Lew Ford

Re: The Official 'Who Do We Protect from the Rule Five Draft?' Thread

I would keep the following players:

    Bronson Arroyo
    Homer Bailey
    Francisco Cordero
    Johnny Cueto
    Carlos Fisher
    Aaron Harang
    Daniel Ray Herrera
    Sam LeCure
    Matt Maloney
    Arthur Rhodes
    Pedro Viola
    Edinson Volquez
    Ryan Hanigan
    Craig Tatum
    Yonder Alonso
    Juan Francisco
    Paul Janish
    Brandon Phillips
    Scott Rolen
    Adam Rosales
    Joey Votto
    Wladimir Balentien
    Jay Bruce
    Chris Dickerson
    Drew Stubbs
    Willy Taveras
    Jared Burton
    Justin Lehr
    Nick Masset
    Micah Owings
    Jonny Gomes

(NOTE: I will edit the rest later because I have to get to class)

Re: The Official 'Who Do We Protect from the Rule Five Draft?' Thread

    Holdovers:
    Bronson Arroyo
    Homer Bailey
    Francisco Cordero
    Johnny Cueto
    Carlos Fisher
    Aaron Harang
    Daniel Ray Herrera
    Sam LeCure
    Matt Maloney
    Ramon Ramirez
    Arthur Rhodes
    Daryl Thompson
    Pedro Viola
    Edinson Volquez

    Ryan Hanigan
    Yonder Alonso
    Juan Francisco
    Paul Janish
    Brandon Phillips
    Scott Rolen
    Adam Rosales
    Drew Sutton
    Joey Votto
    Wladimir Balentien
    Jay Bruce
    Chris Dickerson
    Drew Stubbs

    Arbitration:
    Jared Burton
    Jonny Gomes
    Nick Masset
    Micah Owings

    New additions:
    Jordan Smith
    Travis Wood
    Enerio Del Rosario
    Sean Watson
    Logan Ondrusek
    Phil Valiquette
    Chris Valaika
    Chris Heisey
    Danny Dorn

    Unprotected:
Chris Denove (I'd love to keep him, but the Reds could always find another Corky Miller on a minor league contract)
Lee Tabor (future LOOGY at best)
Alex Smit (has done a great job, but his spotty control is a concern; basically another Phil Valiquette with a less-impressive fastball)
Tom Cochran (great comeback story but hasn't been anything special)
    Dallas Buck (can't stay healthy)
Ben Jukich (future LOOGY at best)

    Non-tendered:
    Laynce Nix (easily replaceable)
Bill Bray (not worth the price to keep him)

    DFAed:
Willy Taveras (just not a good baseball player)
Danny Richar (has been DFAed already once this year)
Kevin Barker (solid bench option but not versatile enough to stay on the roster)
Mike Lincoln (already have plenty of bullpen depth)
Wilkin Castillo (just a mediocre-at-best bench player)
Craig Tatum (defense is nice, but his offensive skills are horrible)

    Tough decisions, but nice thread.

Lets start the math at 44.

DFA - Taveras, McDonald, Richar, Barker, Thompson, Lincoln and Lecure

    Now at 37

Let walk - Lehr, Wells, Hernandez, Miller and Nix

    Now at 32

    Add:

    Del Rosario
    Wood
    Heisey
    Denove
    Ondrusek
    Valaika
    Dorn
    Smith

    Puts the team at 40.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

I suspect that the Reds will leave a roster spot open for adding someone in the draft.

This would be my choice. Those released include Daryl Thompson and Dallas Buck (injuries), Pedro Viola and Sean Watson (wildness), and a host of AAAA starting filler (Kip Wells, Justin Lehr, Sam LeCure, et al). DFAs are Taveras and perhaps Burton and Bray. (Depends on Rule V Draft, really.)

There is one spot open for a Rule V pick, as I think that's a great way to find a good, live arm for the pen now and perhaps the rotation later. Notice, too, the lack of a second catcher. I'd wait until after the Rule V to grab a second catcher, whether it be in a deal or as a free agent.

I knew that, but I couldn't make up that last decision so I threw that in there hoping no one would notice

Just so you know, Dallas Buck and Sean Watson wouldn't need to be released--they'd only be available in the draft.

Ordinarily that would be the case, but I'm not sure they have that possibility this year given so many players they need to add to the 40 man roster this offseason. This might be a year where we don't look in that window.

Re: The Official 'Who Do We Protect from the Rule Five Draft?' Thread

Given how bad our W-L record is going to be this season, I'd like to see the Reds go with 39 guys and try to pull someone from rule V (since we will have an early pick). I admit that I am not an expert on all these prospects, but the lack of depth at the ML level in position players means we could probably carry someone next year. Maybe draft a toolsy SS or OF like the Padres did with Bip Roberts years ago. Carry him for one year and then send him down to the minors.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

The only Rule V picks I'd be interested in are quality arms that can be relievers now and perhaps starters later or questionably healthy bats that can be DL'ed for a majority of the season.

What about a backup catcher if we can fenagle the roster to open up a spot without endangering someone we want to keep?
