Homer Bailey - has he changed your opinion?

I'm curious how (if any) Homer Bailey's recent performances have influenced peoples opinions of him based on what we'd seen from the first couple of years.

In the past six starts now, he's lowered his ERA from 7.53 to 5.15. That's thanks to the following line:

    39.3 IP
    41 K
    17 BB
    2 HRA
    3.07 FIP

Hasn't changed my opinion really. He has had this in parts over the years, he has just gotten more consistent with it lately.

BTW, the fourth option should read "now" I want more.

Doug, I agree with you to an extent. He's shown this at AAA in long stretches. However, this is really the first time he's shown this ability at the MLB level. He's putting more zip on his fastball (especially later as the game goes on). He's got much better command. And for the first time, he's pitching with confidence.

I'll reserve judgment till he pitches in games that matter. In April/May.

That's pretty much what it takes to develop into a real mlb pitcher. I'm not sold on any young pitcher until they can establish themselves consistently at the highest level; Homer seems on track to me. Will he continue this trend? I haven't a clue, but I'm encouraged that he's made progress this year.

I am not going to blow any smoke one way or another about him, though I do think that we have seen encouragement from him.

I'd say he's turned that corner. The only thing that was really stopping him was his head. Now that the confidence is there, the sky's the limit for Homer. I'm not going to say he's the ace...that's jumping the gun WAAAAY too quickly. I will say that he's cemented a rotation spot for next season though. Carved in granite just about.

I'm relieved to say that David "Homer" Bailey can be penciled in as a starter on the Reds next year. That in itself is progress.

That's the key, you could see him morph into a different guy when he pitched in that Cards game (and most notably the intial Pujols PA) early in the season.

Re: Homer Bailey - has he changed your opinion?

I voted that I am not really sure, but that is just because that is how I would vote for any pitcher with a career 6 ERA who just pitch well in 6 games in a row.

It's a good sign, but nothing definitive. Good enough to make him a front runner for a spot in next season's rotation, but I doubt that he will be near this productive over a full season.

Re: Homer Bailey - has he changed your opinion?

I watched him live and in person smoke the Cardinals in the last "game that matters" that this team played back in July. Had Pujols et al shaking their heads. Touched 98. He's always had this in him. The club has rushed him, people have been impatient, and all the while, he's learning. I expect it to get better from here.

    He's still just a kid.

I dislike this line of reasoning.

These games "matter" to Homer Bailey -- they're his audition for a starting role next season. We know it. He knows it. No sense in pretending that just because the Reds are eliminated from any post-season hope that the individual players aren't fighting for next year.

These games "matter" to the teams he's pitching against. Florida is in the chase for the Wild Card. In the last 6 starts cited by Brutus, he's also pitched well against Colorado (leading the WC) and Los Angeles (division leader) -- both teams playing games that still "matter."

I'd still like to see that walk total come down some...but he is definitely improving.

Add to that the fact that Volquez is out for most of (if not all of) next year and that Owings hasn't exactly outpitched Homer and all of a sudden, you can easily pencil Homer into the rotation for 2010.

They may not matter for the Reds, but they matter for Bailey, the Marlins, the Giants, the Dodgers, the Rockies, the Braves, etc.
