    I find it interesting as growing up I always heard/thought first base side is "supposed" to be the home side.

    On California Third Bases Side was always the Home Team as i was growing up playing baseball

    When the Reds built Riverfront Stadium it was said the home dugout was on the first base side so the players would have a shorter trip to it on a hot day upon grounding out.

    Traditionally, home dugouts always were on the 1st Base side. While baseball diamonds were meant to be designed facing due east along the 3rd base line, that would give the 1st base side dugout the first chance at shade, and thus a break and a rest when sitting in their dugouts, while the 3rd base side would remained exposed to the sun making it more uncomfortable for the visiting players. With most games played at night now, it becomes irrelevant.

    If someone were to make their diamond a different direction from the norm, then it would make sense to make the home dugout the one that gets shade earlier.
