    Non-tender candidates

    Get your dumpster diving here!

    Non-Tender Candidates

By Tim Dierkes [October 5, 2009 at 8:14am CST]
In mid-December, the non-tender deadline will occur. That's when teams decide whether to offer a contract to the unsigned players on their 40-man roster. Players not tendered a contract become free agents, so we'll add a good 30 players to the list. It is a chance for certain players to reach free agency without putting in the typical six years of service time. Past non-tenders include David Ortiz, Jayson Werth, Rick Ankiel, Ryan Franklin, David Eckstein, and Chad Durbin. Last year Ty Wigginton, Jonny Gomes, Willy Taveras, and Takashi Saito were among those cut loose. Usually at least a few useful guys are unearthed and a handful sign for more than a million bucks.
Below I've listed non-tender candidates for each team; it's mostly speculative. Feel free to debate or add names in the comments; I may add to the list based on that. A few of these players - Jeff Francoeur, John Maine, Mark Teahen, and Delmon Young - are unlikely, but were included anyway.

I wish you would've picked either DeWayne Wise or Tyler Yates to break up the last two in your list!

    My wish list:

Jeff Francoeur (not a big fan of his, but he's still young and has played better with Mets)
    Chad Gaudin
    Jeremy Hermida
    Conor Jackson
    Kelly Johnson
    John Maine
    Andy Marte
    Dioner Navarro
    Kelly Shoppach
    Delmon Young

My list is almost identical to this, other than I have absolutely no interest in Marte, and only lukewarm interest in Francouer or Shappach.

But Hermida, Young, Navarro, Maine or Gaudin especially - I'd have a lot of interest in. I like Conor Jackson a lot too, but I really don't know how he's going to recover from this sickness. It seems like something that could continue to plague him from ever being a full-time player. I hope that's not the case, obviously.

John Buck could be an ideal catching tandem with Hanigan, in that he's experienced and more power, less on-base.

Well, from what I've heard about the Mets, they plan to keep Francoeur. You never know with Minaya, though.

I really like Kelly Shoppach and Craig Hansen from that list...

    Re: Non-tender candidates

Any number of these non-tender candidates could be useful for the Reds next season, depending on where we have identified needs.

For instance, if we trade Harang, Arroyo or Cordero this off-season as part of a blockbuster deal to secure a long-term SS, then we could have some free cash to dip into this pool of candidates and a certified need to do so.

To plug the gap from the departure of a Harang or Arroyo, I would make a play for a decent FA pitcher like Justin Duchscherer or Jason Marquis and also try to pick up someone else this non-tender group. Guys who might qualify here include Lowry, Gaudin, Maine, Olsen -- or if the Reds are strapped for cash, then Baek or Carlyle.

Say Cordero is dealt instead. Then sidelined CWS closer Bobby Jenks could look appealing, or some combo of lower-priced relievers who might compete for the closing role. The Blue Jays Accardo comes to mind, since he's been there and done it before with some success.

Otherwise, we might look to this pool for a tandem mate behind the plate for Hanigan -- either Navarro or Buck if we perceive Hanigan as an understudy again in 2010, or Treanor if we intend to elevate Hanigan to lead dog and need someone capable, but lower-priced, to watch his back.

There are some lefty hitting outfielders here that also might help us, depending on whether we plan to bring back Nix or elevate Francisco. If not, then we could probably use, but probably not afford, a player like Hermida.

I almost included him because he would be a nice platoon partner to go with Jonny Gomes, but I'm just not sure if he is worth the roster spot...

His health has always been a factor, but he put up some impressive OPS numbers in that cavern in Washington a couple of years ago.

I'd jump all over Delmon Young, Dioner Navarro and Wang (if the price is right on Wang).

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

But yeah I think he would be a solid addition if you didn't have to break the bank.

I don't see Corky back but what do you think the chances are that the Reds non tender Bray?
