Reds Top 40 prospects (2009) - Who should appear on first ballot?

I'm planning on starting the Redszone top 40 prospect polls later this week or early next week and before I start I'd like see who Redszone thinks should be on the first ballot. I'm going to try to limit the first poll to roughly 8-10 choices. Guys like Alonso and Frazier are obvious choices but I'm interested in seeing who else is nominated as a realistic option on the first poll.

Below is our top 40 from last offseason. I bolded the names of prospects who lost their prospect eligibility or are no longer in the Reds organization.

    Prospect #6 - Kyle Lotzkar
    Prospect #7 - Daryl Thompson
    Prospect #8 - Juan Francisco
    Prospect #9 - Juan Duran
    Prospect #10 - Chris Dickerson
    Prospect #11 - Devin Mesoraco
    Prospect #12 - Danny Dorn

    Prospect #18 - Matt Maloney
    Prospect #19 - Carlos Fisher
    Prospect #20 - Chris Heisey
    Prospect #21 - Ryan Hanigan
    Prospect #22 - Dallas Buck
    Prospect #23 - Adam Rosales
    Prospect #24 - Alex Buchholz
    Prospect #25 - Travis Wood
    Prospect #26 - Jeremy Horst

I'll go with this except I don't know enough about Silva or Johnson.

It's hard for me to come up with only 10 names. Here are the first 15 that popped in my head (and I'm sure I'm forgetting other that I would consider for the top 10).
    Alonso
    Frazier
    Soto
    Mesoraco
    Duran
    Rodriguez
    Valaika
    Maloney
    Dorn
    Wood
    Lotzkar
    Francisco
    Leake
    Boxberger
    Cozart

I almost always agree with lollipop.

Other guys who haven't been mentioned who I think should at least be considered in the top half or so of the list:

    Serrano
    Thurman
    Klinker
    Gregorius
    Del Rosario
    Joseph
    Tuttle
    Cline
    Viola
    Fairel

    Guess I'm a pitching guy.

Jordan Smith was in the top fifteen of BA's Reds prospects last year. I think he was number 13. He was doing ok at AA this year then got hurt. He never gets votes in these polls.

Not sure where he fits in, but let's keep him in mind.

Why limit the poll to only 8 or 10 choices? The more options there are the better our results will be. Why don't you get a large group of about 20 prospects and take guys off who don't receive votes two polls in a row?

Well to be honest, are there really even 8-10 choices for the #1 prospect in the system? At best I can see 4 choices in the running for #1.

First ballot should be a competition between

Alonso, Leake, Fraizer, Yorman, and Fransisco...and coincidently that is my top 5 in order.

Those 5 all could have an argument made for them being #1:

Alonso (High AVG, High OBP, Good SLG)
Leake (Best pitching prospect in the system)
Fraizer (Solid, polished all around hitter, and versatile in the field. Probably the best bet to be at least a league average player)
Yorman (Highest upside of anyone in the system)
Fransisco (Arguably one of, if not, the best power hitter in the system, with great contact skills for a power hitter)

I think its even less than that Doug, but on the whole, I agree.

I wonder where Zach Stewart would have been ranked.

Is it me or does it all of a sudden seem like this organization is pretty bare? I'm thinking the system will be ranked somewhere in the 20's by BA next spring. That's down from #14 (2009), #3 (2008), and #12 (2007).

Maybe it's all that talent that has graduated to the big league level.
