I think they'll get their shot. Networks can wait half a year or a year then "dust off" the story and make a reality show about the failed hoax and how the family is living afterward. Right now they'd get fried for it since the public are already getting their reality fix through the news and it affords them to ride their moral high horse, but in a year, curiosity and boredom will convince a lot of people to come down from yonder horse to see what happened to this family.
Here's the article from the guy that was working with Balloon Dad on the various ideas including a balloon hoax for publicity.

It's all fun & games until the National Guard gets called out.
With his balloon:
Didn’t he play a role in inducing panic, and didn’t he play a role in releasing that floating object with no ability to control it or what outcome it might have played in potentially injuring others? I don’t see how this man escapes some sort of consequences.

FOX NEWS reports that the wife of the "Jiffy Pop" craft builder has announced she's preggers again--BUZZARD is the chosen name (it will be an unhappy child)-Several TV producers are studying the concept of a show of an ever growing family named on bird species-who knows-it could just fly! Of course, Jiffy Pop has expressed interest in sponsoring the show... Any ideas on names for the show?
Back in the day, this guy would have rightly been written off as a kook. Now, he is no doubt being considered for entertainment value. TVLand is more than Barnum & Bailey could have ever imagined. Their big tents are nothing compared to the TV & Movie entertainment industries. The circus comes to town every night in every corner of the world through the airwaves, cable, and the internet, making bearded ladies and midgets look like child's play.
