The San Diego Padres will name Jed Hoyer as their new general manager later today, a front office source tells SI.com.

Hoyer, 35, most recently served as the Boston Red Sox's senior vice president and assistant general manager. He joined the Red Sox front office at age 28, where he has helped to build Boston's rosters, assisted in contract negotiations and offered sabermetric analysis. He served as Red Sox co-general manger for 44 days in 2005 while Theo Epstein took hiatus from the team.

Hoyer will replace Kevin Towers who was fired Oct. 3, after the team finished 75-87.

Hoyer is a New Hampshire native who pitched Wesleyan University to the championship game of the 1994 Division III World Series.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox rumors started up again.

Good point. And what really must frustrate her is that she might be out of a job if the Dodgers' post-divorce ownership group decides to clean house. If it has been so hard to land a GM job with another club, it might be just as hard to land a job at her current level elsewhere.

A very nice hire by the Padres, IMO. I'd love to have Hoyer as the Reds GM.

He comes off seeming a little young and stat-geeky, so the media reaction might be a little interesting.

Right, but even compared to what I'm already used to, Theo doesn't toss around the advanced analysis terms casually the way Jed sometimes does.

He would be better served if he kept the sabr talk to a minimum when talking to the media.

I'm not sure I'd agree, particularly if he has success. Always take every opportunity to expand knowledge.

The best way to teach anything, I believe, is with a story. If he has success stories, this could go a long way toward changing a small part of the culture (contradictions in sentence intentional.)

That can be true as long as the conversation isn't drenched in technospeak. Never talk over peoples heads if you actually want them to understand what you mean. If he says what he means in a way that is easily understood then, hell, even people set in their ways like Joe Morgan might learn something.

    Exactly

and Theo knows this and that's why he downplays it in the media. Don't think that Theo doesn't understand advanced sabermetric arguments, but don't think he doesn't understand that p.r. has preserved his job. The only reason he still has a job is because the media and fan base took his side after his dispute with Lucchino and his 44-day hiatus (at which point Hoyer was co-GM of the Red Sox).

Who knows. If dePodesta could have done the p.r. thing a little better, maybe he might still have the GM job with the Dodgers.

If they win, he'll be able to do and talk anyway he wants , and if they lose it won't matter.

If anyone's interested, this is a really good recent example of Theo educating, JD Drew's value(starts around 10:00 on the audio) has been THE topic on the station for most of the last 3 days.

The media loves the rise and fall of man-with man being cold hearted and finding succes with his new cold, mechanical thing. Heck, it's a literary device.

They perceive sabermetrics as a tool of the young, thus the media is just biding their time waiting for someone to fall - we will be told this young man was too big for his britches, thought he knew more than he did, and needed to get his comupance. Sabermetrics plays the part of the new fangled thing that drags the young man upward, but also forces him to lose his soul.

Sabermetrics will only take hold when the young man rises, falls, and then gains his soul back when he uses sabermetrics with a heart.

Until then -we'll have to hear about how cold hearted the new thing is.
