ESPN just announced: LaRussa to return as Cardinals manager

Tony LaRussa to return as manager with a multi-year deal. Some changes on the coaching staff including firing hitting coach Hal McRae

Leading candidate to replace him.... (Don't highlight if you want to guess) Mark McGwire

I doubt he would be interested in the hitting coach job. He doesn't seem to be interested in being in the spotlight, or involved in baseball at all, these days.

Wonder if he'll supply autographed syringe? Always thought of Hal as a top-notch hitting coach. I've wanted him back in Cincy.

I think that was true a couple years ago, but seems like there was a story last season 08, that he was looking to get into coaching now.

Yep. I know there's been some effort to get him back into baseball, but it seems he's decided that it's best for his peace of mind to stay away.

I wonder if, when the Cardinal hitters ask Big Mac how he would have approached a hitting situation, he tells them that he doesn't want to reflect on the past.

It sounds like the McGwire thing is about as firm as a not-yet-announced move can be.

When Orioles hitters ask Palmeiro how he would have approached a hitting situation Palmeiro says he has never approached a hitting situation. Period.

When LaRussa is asked how he thinks McGwire might handle being asked about his past, he threatens to sue for slander.

I think at the press conference to announce McGwire as coach he admits to prior steroid use or gives a very detailed account of what he took and when. It would lessen any potential logterm distraction. IIRC wasn't Holliday working with McGwire this past off season.
