Anti-virus software and/or security suite software advice needed

I have a PC with Norton Anti-virus, and the subscription is set to expire in January. I also have a new notebook that came with Norton Internet Security suite, and it's set to expire in three weeks.

I have been paying for Norton subscriptions for several years, and have been very satisfied with the results. But it runs about $40/year, and I occasionally run across online opinions that say that free products are just fine. Is the "you get what you pay for" adage true about anti-virus software, as well? I tried AVG free about five years ago and hated it.

If I stay with Norton, I have a question: Can the Norton multi-computer license be used for Norton Anti-Virus on one machine and on the complete Norton Internet Security on the other, or do the products have to match?

Thanks for any insights you guys can provide.

I was completely unaware of that. The reviews seem to be good, but the Norton and McAfee people are claiming it's substandard. (Wow, what a surprise. )

One sentence in a review I read jumped out at me:

...those with paid solutions should think about taking MSE for a spin before renewing subscriptions.
I may do just that. Thanks for the heads-up, RBA.

I might check that out also. I was not aware of it, thanks RBA.

I use the AVG free edition, never had a problem. It's come along way from 5 years ago. They just released version 9.0 within the last couple weeks.

I've had horrible expierences with Norton, it's bloated and typically makes most systems run like total crap.

Just got a new laptop and a friend of mine who is a tech guru suggested the free Microsoft program. I've been happy up to this point.

Avast! is free for home use, and works better than anything else I've tried.

So far no one has advised me to keep sending my dollars to Symantec (Norton) when these subscriptions run out.

Another endorsement for AVG. Been using it for years and I have talked at least a dozen friends into giving it a try with no complaints.

Your next question will probably be "how do I get this Norton crap off my computer".

Yes, I have heard stories, and it had crossed my mind. I haven't checked, but is there info on the Web that will guide me through getting rid of it?

Another vote for AVG. Even our tech guys at work suggested we use it rather than pay them to install something else.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I support both AVG and Avast over Norton. Norton not only sucks as an anti virus, it also costs money and causes your computers resources to be eaten alive compared to most other AV's.

I got the McAfee virus program free from Comcast. Probably the only good thing Comcast has done for me.
