    Trade Idea

Looks like the Tigers are looking to shed some steep contracts and what do you know.. The Reds maybe as well. What if these two teams swapped bad contracts in a deal that looks like this:

Aaron Harang and Francisco Cordero plus cash (half of their 2010 contracts) to the Tigers in exchange for Jeremy Bonderman, Dontrell Willis, top 15 prospect, cash (Bonderman and Willis entire 2010 contracts)

Reds save some cash in this move and can get some payroll flexabilty. Tigers get consistancy and the Reds add some question marks but at the cost and change of scenery might balance the deal out. Reds also get a prospect to compensate the question marks. Willis was almost released last season and Reds could use another Owings. Tigers get a closer and a strikeout/potential innings eater ace. Do you make that move?

The Tigers farm system is pretty much devoid of talent (strieby/sizemore/crosby and I wouldn't be excited about either of those 3), Willis is awful, and Bonderman makes the farm and willis both look stunning in comparison... As much as I'm a fan of getting younger, this proposal is terrible.

Tigers are slashing payroll too. Don't see this happening.

Why would both teams exchange cash in the same deal?

And why would we trade "bad" contracts that aren't really bad at all for the priviledge of taking on truly bad contracts like Willis?

The Tigers right now remind me of some NFL teams from a few years back who couldn't figure out how to structure contracts so they wouldn't wind up with a huge salary cap mess from carrying a whole lot of dead money. It's like the Tigers are almost spending more on players who aren't even playing for their team anymore than for ones who are.

From here, the optics of both teams sending money is "insanity".
