I liked Coutlangus as well, and could perhaps see Koplove coming in with the hiring of Bryan Price. Koplove had that awesome sidewinding style of our old pal Scott Sullivan if I remember correctly. Definitely would like the return of Smit, and perhaps Cumberland.

Scott Sullivan, now there's a Reds reliever who was awesome -- an equal to the Nasty Boys, if you ask me, but he never got the credit he was due because he had to operate solo without the cavalry all around him coming to the rescue.

Koplove's style mirrors Sullivan's, but the question mark remains: Is he as elastic? Worth pairing him up with Price again to see, especially because Koplove's banner years (2001-2005) occurred in Arizona under Price's watch.

Every bullpen needs a trick pitcher or two, someone whose trick is unique enough to startle batters. We've already got Herrera and his trick is good, but only within clearly defined limits. He got used a bit too much in 2009.

Koplove's got a different trick, and he could be as effective, but probably only if used sparingly. He differs from Sullivan in that respect. That's why, while I wouldn't hesitate to sign him as a spring training walk-on, we should think twice before giving him any extended deal like Lincoln got.

AAA needs very little in the way of position players, assuming no deals. They're stacked in the infield, with two or three extra AAAA middle infielders and there are questions as the where Francisco and Frazier will play. They may add a RF, perhaps McDonald. Or they may bring up Sean Henry. (He's still only 23 and did okay last season.)

The pitching rotation, if healthy, is also set, though they may want another arm just in case (Lehr, LeCure, Wood, Klinker, Jukick/ Thompson/ Mallet)

I believe Mallet was released with drug issues.

The Reds might need a catcher at AAA now. With Tatum gone to the O's, at least one recent report of Corky Miller becoming a Free Agent (contradicting an earlier report of him signing a contract) and Wilkin Castillo's status behind the plate iffy even before his injury, I think the Reds may need a body there even if Miller is still in the fold. Hernandez will probably spend some time on the DL in 2010 with some one from AAA getting called up and the Bats will need somebody who can play. A guy that is a little interesting is Raul Padron. Padron played in the A's system in 2009 but has some things that I find interesting:

    1. Though he was a mediocre hitter at 3 levels in 2009, in the Venezuelan Winter league he's gone .286/.329/.584/.914 with 6 HR in 77 ABs. That would suggest that there is at least a little power potential.
    2. He's a LH hitter which is is somewhat rare at the catching position and makes for a good alternative to the other catchers who may be on the roster.
    3. He just turned 25 in September, so 2010 will be his age 25 season - still fairly young as catchers go.

I'm clueless about his defense, but if he can do an average job back there, he might be worth a look.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

Can players be suspended for smoking pot? Does that mean Lincecum will be suspended to start next season?

Minor Leaguers can be. They can actually be kicked out of baseball forever for 3 suspensions. Major Leaguers can smoke all they want without any punishment. Very strange.

This is all I know about Derrick Loop, but, since I remembered reading this article from seeing his name on the list, and, well, it's just kind of fun.

    http://www.boston.com/sports/basebal...art_opponents/

There are times when his Single A Salem teammates laugh at Derrick Loop's pickoff move, no matter how often they have seen it, like children laughing at the same cartoon over and over.

They've seen a runner looking at home plate, wondering where the ball went, and then get tagged out, his eyes glazed over with a how-did-that-just-happen stare. They've seen a runner keep his foot on first until the ball popped in the catcher's mitt, like he reverted to Little League rules.

This week's transactions include the Braves signing C JC Boscan (spent a year in the Reds' system), Houston picking up ex-Ranger first-round pick Drew Meyer, the Royals grabbing ex-Brave righty Jorge Campillo and ex-Cardinal Brad Thompson, Philly signing OF DeWayne Wise, and Seattle getting righty reliever Steven Shell.

    ---
    Cincinnati Reds

    Signed: OF Albert Laboy
Placed on restricted list: RHP Rafael Gonzalez
Granted free agency: OF Laynce Nix
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Rosario Del Enerio, RHP Logan Ondrusek, RHP Jordan Smith, LHP Philippe Valiquette, LHP Travis Wood, SS Chris Valaika, OF Chris Heisey
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: RHP Daryl Thompson, OF Laynce Nix
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Rafael Gonzalez

Looks like Raffi Gonzalez may have decided to retire.

Albert Laboy, 23, was a 14th-round pick of the Pirates in 2005 out of a Florida high school. He made it as high as High-A (Lynchburg, actually) in 2008. 2009 he was either injured or elsewhere, 'cause there's no stats. He has a career line of .242/.302/.332 and no particularly notable power or speed.

    Reds holler at Laboy.

Reds sign pitcher Jon Adkins to a minor league contract. He pitched in Korea last season. Here's his Tweet:

Was he one of the guys we sold to some Korean teams? Or did he just sign after the 2008 season?

He was Louisville's primary closer for 2008, collecting 30 saves and compiling a 3.48 ERA for the season. He led the International League in saves that year. We released him after 2008, and he subsequently signed to pitch for the Busan Lotte Giants in Korea. He did well there, too, leading the Korean Baseball Organization with 26 saves in 2009. Here's a nice writeup from the Hall of Very Good on the West Virginia native and his return to the Reds' fold:
