I heard that Tiger Woods 2011 is going to have some new cheat codes.

If you look at athletes as "idols," therein lies the problem. You are mistaking excellence on the field for excellence off of it, which are two different matters entirely.

While I realize Tiger has helped fuel a squeaky clean image through advertising, I would say those who actually believed it need to remember this:

Since when is there truth in advertising? From Ford to Fidelity to Wal-Mart, their ads are filled with imagery that says "We are good," but at the end of the day they are a business and they do things, well, that aren't always the way you'd treat your grandmother. Tiger is no different.

If you go to Tiger Woods' website and read about "values" and think that means he's made a promise to you or the public that he won't make mistakes or cheat on his wife you are a fool. And if you teach your children to look up to Tiger Woods for anything other than being a good golfer, you are a fool for that, too.

These people are really good athletes. That's it. It doesn't mean anything other than that. Michael Jordan wasn't the best basketball player of all time because he was the best person of all time. Same for Tiger.

Sponsors, advertisers, the league- they all want us to buy into this stuff. They put it in a bowl with a creamy froth, and we lick it right up. Not sure who you blame on matters of supply and demand, I just know my son is being raised with the idea that perfection on a diamond, a gridiron, or a golf course means just and only that.

Advertising is about imagery, word placement, about making you feel good- it isn't about truth. It's about being ideal, when we all know there is no such thing. If the way Tiger Woods hits a golf ball makes you instantly feel like he's the greatest humanitarian of all time, he didn't let you down, you let yourself down.

For a an athlete to say "My off field character is what makes me a great athlete"-that's as logically flawed an argument as saying being a jerk makes you a lousy one: Albert Belle says hi. Ty Cobb says hi. Pete Rose says hi.

Instead of hitting these athletes upside the head when they prove such image making is flawed, we should hit ourselves for buying into it.
You are preaching to the choir on all of this. My hypothetical questions were aimed at showing that Highlifeman 21's morally neutral stance is most likely due to the adultery not afflicting his moral code. I'm assuming the examples I provided would afflict nearly everyone's moral code, assuming sanity and some semblance of a conscience.

    Gotcha.

FWIW, I didn't take his statement so literal as to mean "Tiger Woods could kill somebody and I would still like him."

I took him at meaning that all things considered, cheating on his wife isn't enough to stop being a fan.

Yep, this Tiger thing has a long, long way to go before the story is completely unfolded. It will take a considerable amount of time to run its course.

Maybe your uncle got Tiger on a good day. That story has been out there for quite some time that Tiger does not tip the folks in the clubhouse or any place else. It's not just one person saying it, it's multiple sources (including fellow golphers and celebrity friends) that have said Tiger does stiff folks.

Francesa had Barkley on the other day who backed it up as fact. He stated that Jordan doesn't tip and neither does Tiger. Now I know that Barkley is not the best source but he plays a lot of golf with both parties he should know their tipping habits.

That doesn't surprise me, because I was initially surprised a PGA Tour golfer would go on the record with those kinds of comments. Not to be overly cynical or anything, but philandering isn't exactly a new thing on the golf tour. (Dan Jenkins once wrote, "there's nothing more boring than a golf tournament in the daytime.") If a golfer is going to point the finger of shame at Tiger, he's implicitly pointing it at plenty of other guys in the locker room. Even a good family man who doesn't approve of the behavior is going to think twice, if he cares at all about getting along with his fellow players.

My point is not really to argue tipping habits. It's that you never know the whole story. Celebrities, by and large and despite all the special treatment they get, are often not treated well in public. They are harrassed, they are spoken of and to like they're not actual people, they are photographed without being asked, etc. Maybe he has a policy of not tipping people who ask for his autograph or who won't leave him alone. I have no idea. I know he tipped excellently in one particular case for good service.

Somebody asks a celebrity for an autograph or a picture while he's having dinner with his family or goes after him for personal questions, gets rebuffed, and all of a sudden there are a million stories on the internet about how this person is a jerk and has no respect for fans. I'm in no way defending Tiger's decisions with regard to recent events. I'm just saying that there is absolutely no way to judge a celebrity's character based on "reports" of brief interactions with strangers, the circumstances of which are never known.
There is no such thing as a pitching prospect.

I know first hand and on several occasions, that both Woods and Jordan are first class jerks that wont even tip a dollar to a waitress for a free drink. Jordans buddy Scotty Pippen is known as NO Tippin Pippin around Vegas. Not that this has anything to do with anything, but it does give you some insight into these and how they feel about the "common folk"

Not sure if you were talking about Charles Barkley or not, but for the record Barkley is an extremely gracious man who's tipping habits are legendary around Vegas. Funny how media perception of these guys differs from reality.

Re: The Tiger Woods Saga Thread

Tiger Woods was into threesomes and shelled out more than $60,000 to cat around with high-priced hookers, a Hollywood madam claimed Thursday.

"One of his favorites was Loredana Jolie," Michelle Braun told the Daily News, describing the gorgeous blond as a Playboy model from Sicily who's been living in New York since age 14.

"She's a stunning girl," said Braun. "He went out with her four or five times. She took part in group sex. They met up in 2006 or early 2007. I'd say he paid $15,000 for her."

Woods "had a pretty big appetite for women" added Braun, as the world famous athlete's list of extramarital "transgressions" continues to grow.

"He was rarely with just one girl. He usually wanted more. He liked three-ways," she said.

Braun, whose escort service was closed due to legal troubles, said two of Woods' other playmates were porn star Holly Sampson and onetime trashy lingerie model Jamie Jungers.

Braun contended Woods would drop $30,000 to $40,000 a weekend for his liaisons and that he met up with the women in cities where he was playing tournaments.

"He would request the college-cutie, girls-next-door look," she said.

Braun also said the girls marveled at the golf champ's endurance.

"He could go for days," she said. "He'd pay a flat rate for an evening, but an evening would usually be extended. The girls would talk about his stamina."

The girls all thought Woods was a "real gentleman" and a good lover, Braun added.

"He'd shower them with gifts, he was very polite and he was amazing in bed ... very sensual and well-endowed."

Woods and most of her celebrity clients always were "smart enough" to pay in cash, Braun said, adding the golf star, in particular, "liked to communicate by text message."

"Most of the girls understood it was a business relationship," Braun said. "I've never known a girl to fall in love with a client. I've seen them develop relationships with men who were available. But Tiger made it clear this was a good time and his wife would always be in the picture."

Jungers, 26, who has said she was in love with Woods, also is going public about their hot-sheets affair, boasting that their secret sex life was GRREAT!

Jungers, who is scheduled to appear this morning on NBC's "Today" show on "Dateline" tonight, refutes the claim that Woods paid her for sex, swearing, "I have nothing to do with prostitution."

"I mean, we had - I felt like we had a lot - or I had a lot of feelings toward him," Jungers admits. "It wasn't just a sexual situation . . . I loved him."

Man. I would not want to be Tiger now. He's getting tied to the bumper and dragged over 50 miles of bad road.

People often wondered if anything could keep him from breaking Nicklaus' majors record. This might do it.

I just wonder how the PGA can control the media zoo when he goes back on the tour? Its not going to be the normal golf writers, its going to be TMZ, National Enquirer, and about every trash tabloid that you can think of that will want to be there. And they won't adhere to the genteel rules of golf. What a mess.

Yeah, nothing like reading things not meant for your eyes. What a hoot. Maybe afterwards we can look into someone's windows who left their blinds open. Come on, they are famous, it's okay!

Tiger Woods is not, has never been, and will never be my moral compass.

What he does in his private life is his own thing. What he does in between the ropes is for fans to enjoy.

Other sports have athletes who've done much worse off the field than Tiger, and I applaud them for their on field actions and contributions, but I don't think it's right what they do off the field, but I'm not their conscious. They make their own choices, just as I make my own choices.

Tiger and I don't roll in the same social circles, so chances are I'll never interact with him. However, if I did, I'd be honored to be in his presence as a great golfer, while also appalled for what he's done in his personal life since it's definitely not cool to cheat on your wife.

Seriously, I only care about him as a golfer.

    Whoa.

I'm morally neutral b/c I'm not screaming at the top of my lungs that what Tiger did was wrong?

Cheating on your wife is wrong. I fully believe that. However, what Tiger does in his marriage has no bearing on my marriage.

I just care what the guy does as a golfer. I said it in a previous post, Tiger Woods is not my moral compass.

I guess I can just separate the man vs the golfer.

Tiger Woods the man, I don't care for him, but it would still be an honor to be around him as a golfer.

As a golfer, he's arguably the best of all time, and regardless of what we does off the course no one can take that away from him.

I feel sorry for Tiger on one hand, b/c although he made some really bad choices and did some really bad things, everything should have been a private matter between him and his wife and his family.

Unfortunately, his fame thrust everything out into the limelight.
