This news was kind of buried in a couple of other threads so I thought I make a fresh topic for this discussion.
I saw this tweet on the contract details from MLBTR:
Scutaro terms from @Buster_ESPN: $5MM in 2010, $5MM in 2011, 2012 option with a $6MM club option, $3MM player option, and $1.5MM buyout.
I think there's also a $1M signing bonus, so it could wind up being any of 2 years/$12.5M, 3 years/$14M, or 3 years/$17M. I think?

Nice deal for the Sox. No, he's not an elite ss but at that price that's pretty good value.
If the reds had signed that contract....would your opinion of the value achieved change?
He IS a major league shortstop (tm), but he's also 33 years old and coming off his best season as a hitter (by far).
I'm not sure I see value on this deal.

I don't think it's a great value, either. But I think it's a better value than I expected because he did just have his best season and it's at a position with so little depth right now. That is, I think it's a reasonable deal for both sides under the circumstances.
BTW, the A's apparently offered him a 3 year deal for a little more guaranteed money.

He's actually 34
Worst case scenario, financialy, he makes $6M+ per year. Well, he's been worth more than that each of the last two years. Also they still have Lowrie and Iglesias in the minors. Scutaro is pretty versatile so he would provide another option for 3rd and 2nd and, if needed, the outfield. I don't think this means that he'll be their ss for 2 years. Just that they have another valuable piece to the puzzle.
