A lot of people complained last time when we left Maloney out. Oh well. I'll go with Joseph and Sulbaran as planned.
They complained because they can't read.
Joseph is a solid prospect. Those who question his 4.35 ERA and 10 BB in 20.2 innings at Dayton should know those numbers are misleading.
Lets look at what happened in his last outing on Sept. 4, which was a game that basically decided whether Dayton was going to the playoffs. It was an absolute must win game. He was the Dayton closer and had proven to be their most dependable reliever. Although he had not been asked to get more than four outs in a game over his last seven outings, Benzinger, hoping to squeeze eight outs out of Joseph, brought him into a 2-2 game in the seventh with men on base. He hoped Joseph could shut out South Bend the rest of the way and the Dragons could push one more run across, sending Dayton to the post-season.
Joseph battled to get out of the seventh inning and pitched a scoreless eighth in a situation with no margin for error. By the ninth, his pitch count was already beyond when they would normally lift him, but Dayton still had not scored and it was still 2-2. He went back out and battled through the 9th inning with command that was desserting him. HIS ERA FOR THE YEAR AT THIS POINT WAS 2.61.
Unfortunately, after the bottom of the ninth, with the game still 2-2, Benzinger made a decision he probably would regret and sent Joseph out for the 10th. I believe his pitch count by now was around 60 for a guy who normally was limited to around 20 pitches. He had nothing left. No command, no velocity. He got charged with four earned runs without getting an out in the 10th. ERA went from 2.61 to 4.35 in that inning. It was painful to watch this kid out there battling for his team, reaching back to try to find something, trying to make a quality pitch, but he just had nothing left as the Dayton season slipped away in that inning. He did not pitch again in 2009.
Going into the 9th inning that night, he had 6 BB on the year in 19.2 innings, a good number. He walked four of the last eight batters he faced pitching on fumes for the benefit of trying to get the team into the playoffs.
When I write at times that numbers can be misleading, there is an example of one case.
