I think North and South would have been an okay description.

North: Minnesota, Nebraska, Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa and Northwestern
South: Purdue, Indiana, THE Ohio State University, Penn State, Illinois, Wisconsin.

There's only one real geographic mistake there, it's simple and it puts it out front that you have some divisional alignments that aren't 100% accurate.
Nobody complains that Indianapolis is North of Cincinnati or Baltimore yet is in the AFC South while Cincinnati and Baltimore are in the AFC North, no one made a big deal about the Cardinals and Cubs being in the NL East while the Reds and Braves were in the NL West.

Geography gets fudged in favor of rivalries all the time.
