For an afterthought, they carry mighty fine national TV ratings, and the advertising dollars that entails.

    Link

They're also an academic fit, something not to be taken lightly.

Edit: Better then Ro-Tel?! Let us not get carried away here! I mean, they also have the Barbasol account, I'm sure they don't want to get greedy!

I doubt you see FSU happen, in the early 90's they were invited (with Florida's blessing) to join along with Arkansas, king bobby said he didn't think a team playing in the SEC could win a national title.

    Funny stuff.

Been to Gainesville or Starksville? They are not the prettiest campus or cities in the world.

This man speaks truth, what a horrible place Starkville is, likely the biggest dump of a town in any major conference, with apologies to Jeff Brantley and any other MSU alums or Starkvillians that may happen to be reading this.

Fayetteville's not exactly the garden spot of the universe either.

I read a quote by - I think - a former MSU hoops coach who said something to the effect that the most exciting time in Starkville is when they unload the Kroger trucks.

While most campuses in the SEC are beautiful places, that wasn't really why I was saying Louisville wouldn't fit in. Louisville is a city college in every sense of the word.

Vanderbilt is IN Nashville, sure, but you feel like you're walking around Mount Vernon or something when you're on the campus.

I can just easily think of at least 6-8 schools who would fit in better with the SEC profile than Louisville.

Vanderbilt has more in common with Emory & Tulane than it does with Louisville or Cincinnati. All private southern research schools, all urban settings, all with strong academic credentials and endowments north of $1b. Walking around, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between any of the former three, but you'd definitely know the difference between the other two.

Tradition keeps Vandy in the SEC -- but they've got very little in common with the rest of the crowd. Beautiful campus, though, and Nashville is probably a fantastic city to live in during school.

You are right on with Stakville but Gainesville? one of the best looking college towns around, sure I'm biased (having lived there for 14 years) but I bet you are as well

Nah, I'm not so big into sports that I hate cities of teams I dislike

Love New York, Chicago, even Ann Arbor!!!!

Gainesville was just way too backward for me. I have nothing against the people though.

Would you say WVU would fit in SEC or ACC better?

The only profile the SEC cares about are strong sports programs, and Louisville has them:

The GBB team was in the Final Four two years ago.

The football team was really solid for about a decade before falling on hard times the past couple years. With Charlie Strong as coach, they should be very good very soon.

Their baseball team has been nationally ranked most of the year and was a Final Four participant three years ago, IIRC. (Perhaps four?)

None of this mentions Louisville's premier program, their men's basketball team, which if among the top ten of all time.

If I were Silve, I'd take Louisville right now over at least half the SEC right now.

To argue somehow the Louisville doesn't fit because it's too much a city college is stretching it a bit. Louisville's campus is just as pretty (and more centralized) than UK's, for example. It takes half an hour and a car to get from some spots at Kentucky's campus to others. Same with UGA. Florida is worse than that. (By a wide, wide margin. I once spent two miserable, urine bloated hours stuck in Gainsville traffic while inching thisclose to the nearest bathroom.)

If you're arguing somehow that it doesn't fit because it's more urban, I'd also argue that one. Most Louisvillians are fairly Southern-fried, from my experience, complete with their own set of baseball caps, belt buckles, and Ford F-150's. Perhaps that wasn't the case in the 70's and early 80's, but it is now.

If the argument is that it's only supported by Louisvillians, I would also disagree. You can't have a rivalry like UK-UofL without a bunch of fans supporting both schools across the state.

If you want to argue attendance, you might have a point. In football only. But basketball attendance is among the best in the nation and their fans travel better than most, meaning more money for other schools. Too, opposing teams will fill Papa John's if Card fans won't grab those tickets, much like Kentucky fans do in basketball against Auburn, Georgia, and, years ago, Florida.

That's a good question... I would welcome WVU into the SEC.

Truth be told, the ACC is probably a better fit, but I'd be fine with them in the SEC.

Actually, geographically, I think they fit in better in the Big 10.

We will NEVER get into the Big 10. We dont fit with them in terms of our research grants/educational standards. WVU has some nice programs but they arent anywhere in terms of total $$$. We also really don't add much in terms of local TV sets (our $$ is in terms of regional association, just look at our midweek game numbers).

Take out the "traditional rivalries" that are in the ACC (Va Tech, BC, Maryland, Miami) and just judge based on the school itself. I think the case could be made SEC would be a better fit for the SEC, the ACC seems to have more private/selective type institutions and the SEC seems to be more public state universities (which is WVU). Plus just think of the type of atmosphere for WVU v Kentucky or Tennessee in Basketball. Plus in football we in most years would be at least a mid tier team who would go to a bowl and not embarrass ourselves with lack of ticket sales (east of the Mississippi).
