Yeah, it's crazy to compare Scott Rolen to Willy Taveras. Taveras is arguably the worst player in baseball while Scott Rolen is an above average player. Mentioning those two in the same breath is a slap in the face to Rolen.
OBM posted this on the Gomes thread. I guess one of these guys that Walt speaks of will be in left in some platoon situation.
Jocketty open to bringing Gomes back

I finally caught up with Walt Jocketty after a day of phone tag. He said the club will continue to try to sign Jonny Gomes. The club did not tender Gomes a contract at the midnight Saturday deadline.
“I told Jonny last night that we’d like to make it work and we’ll try to do that,” Jocketty said. “We just didn’t want to be locked in with arbitration.”
Jocketty continues to talk with Laynce Nix’s agent as well.
“We’re pretty close to getting something done on that,” Jocketty said.
He said he was intigued by some of the other club’s nontenders.
“I don’t want to mention names yet,” he said. “I want to talk to Dusty (Baker) and see who’s a good fit.”
I mentioned Alfredo Amezaga, who would seem to be a fit for the utility/shortstop role.
“He’s a good athlete,” Jocketty said. “He’s had trouble staying healthy.”

i am ok with that. we don't know if either Stubbs or Heisey will hit a lick in the bigs. we do know Stubb's defense is fantastic & he has great speed.
my point is that if we have decided Stubbs is our guy for CF then I would rather trade Hesiey to plug a hole elsewhere (say SS or even a SP better than Maloney) rather than use him in LF. we don't need his speed to cover LF and his bat just isn't going to be enough to justfy playing here. get a stopgap bat for LF until either Alonso or Francisco is ready rather than use Heisey here.
.
Stubbs will be the every day CF and will not platoon. Dickerson will get spot starts in CF when Stubbs needs a break.
Bruce is locked into RF. He is another player that won't platoon. I just don't think you platoon a bat as dangerous as Bruce's. He needs to learn to become a better hitter but that is all in his development.
Dickerson, Heisey, and Frazier should be the three going into spring training competing for the LF job. I would like to see a FA added to the mix but Holiday isn't coming so I don't see a big upgrade over what potentially is in house.
I guess you could always have Stubbs in CF full time and platton Dickerson and Heisey in LF instead of the other way around.

Way I see it go with Balentin and Fransisco and Heisey combo's for OF along with Stubbs and Jay Bruce. fact is this teams not spending cash so best gamble with youth instead retread proven crap. PS wish Gomes was kept honestly.

If Gomes and Nix was resigned as has been speculated in media interviews with Jocketty/Baker, which outfielder would go back to the minors or be released?
Who would be in left?

* player order above by 2009 OPS
Side notes -
A. A lot of players with OPS below .800 and a lot of players with OPS below .700 in 2009
B. One could compare 2009 - 2008 OPS to see if there is an indicator of significant differences due to 2009 injuries, that might imply the Reds could be much better with given player x, y, or z in 2010

All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!
Maybe if the Dodgers REALLY want Harang, they'll take Taveras too.
To me the outfield looks pretty cut and dried:
Bruce in right and Stubbs in center every day until the Reds are ready to cut bait on them.
Left field will be Heisey's to lose and Dickerson will get playing time resting all three starters. They're all young guys, so the more at bats they get the better...it's not about their performance, it's about their development. Ideally you don't develop your entire outfield at the same time, but the Reds will never have the ideal situation until the disparity in MLB is fixed.
Of course, if they do manage to trade Harang and Taveras's salaries away, they might actually sign a decent left fielder for a year...who knows?
