The Reds are going to have to build a retirement center onto GABP if they continue their interest in the elderly

Until last year's 55 OPS+ 253 PA debacle, Brian Giles had produced a better than average OPS+ for every year in his career. Granted his defense just isn't what it used to be, but he might have a little juice in his bat. There certainly are other players I would be more concerned with getting PT than Brian Giles.

That would be par for the course.

It's like the team is personally inviting me not to care about them anymore.

was there some injury that caused Giles to be so incredibly bad last year?
his dropoff from 2008 to 2009 was like falling off a cliff.

That usually happens when players near 40 years of age.

Not exactly a big fan of signing up someone with a sketchy history off the field either.

He got hit with a multimillion dollar palimony lawsuit brought by a longtime girlfriend who charged that he physically attacked her while she was pregnant.

Giles acknowledged that he slapped the woman in a Phoenix bar in an incident that got videotaped, but otherwise refuted the rest of the charges, saying, "At no time did I hit, kick, or push the plaintiff so that it caused her to miscarry."

Still, pretty nasty business that seemingly cast a cloud over his entire 2009 season.

I'd pass on him -- not because of the personal allegations, but owing to the fact that he looks cooked. We have enough problems already.

Woops. I probably should've started a thread instead of putting the news about the Reds interest in Giles here:

    and here:

Oh well. Like I said in those posts this only shows that they didn't non-tender Gomes because of a "youth movement". This is from an OBM post in the thread "Jonny Gomes Non-Tendered":

“I told Jonny last night that we’d like to make it work and we’ll try to do that,” Jocketty said. “We just didn’t want to be locked in with arbitration.”

Jocketty continues to talk with Laynce Nix’s agent as well.

“We’re pretty close to getting something done on that,” Jocketty said.

He said he was intigued by some of the other club’s nontenders.

“I don’t want to mention names yet,”

Who knows what they'll do but it's nice to know that we have another offseason of scrounging through the bargain bin for help.

His age and past PED use kind of make it a risky move but in his career at GABP his OPS is 1.113 so I might throw a 2 year offer at him but no more.

    Really?

I am all for bringing in players that upgrade the talent level. All Giles would serve to do, is to take at bats from younger players.
Hugs, smiling, and interactive Twitter accounts, don't mean winning baseball. Until this community understands that we are cursed to relive the madness.
