If you are Holliday you take that because honestly I think the Cards are just bidding alone as I have yet to hear other teams offer him a contract besides the Cards. I just wish the Reds had the money to put forth to actually bring winning baseball back to Cincinnati.
IMO, Matt Holliday is not worth an average of $16.25M per year
The eight years would scare me. How great will Holliday be from ages 30 through 37? That is hardly ancient, but it is still the back nine.

I hope the Cards spend it on him. While he will put a decent numbers for the first part of the contract and helps to protect Albert, he won't hit like he did after the trade last year and he makes it tougher for the Cards to spend on others. And last I looked, he wasn't a pitcher, so Duncan won't help him much...

This strikes me as a Todd Helton like deal. I like Holliday to continue to be a very productive player in to his mid 30's, but he's very likely going to be overpaid for a good portion of the deal once his defensive value falls off...
I don't think he gets a better offer.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
Reminiscent of our Junior deal but without the hometown discount. Cardinal fans will be cheering if Holliday returns. But the euphoria will eventually wear out, and the questioning will begin.
Everyone knows Holliday's skills will decline before this contract ends. How long before will determine just how foolish this contract proves to be. Glad it's the Cardinals and not the Reds proposing the deal.

Agree. Even in the front years the contract is rich. The only way this makes sense for the Cards is for salaries to continue to escalate. Further, they will need to save at least half of their payroll for Pujols in 2012 and beyond.

It helps when you draw over 3 million per year for the last several years.
Winning a lot of games the last several years helps draw those 3 million fans too. Being relevant makes a difference.
That's what I'd be worried about if I were the Cardinals' FO. And, on top of that, Carpenter and/or Wainwright when the time comes.
