Here is the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 1-5-10. Marty and Thom started the show by talking about how it is 6 weeks away from the Reds first ST in Arizona. Thom said the Reds caravan is coming up at the end of the month. Marty said the Reds signed Josh Anderson, late of the Royals, to a minor league contract with an invite to major league camp. Marty said that Walt is back from an overseas vacation and it appears his plan of action is inaction. Walt is going to wait until all the big names are signed then pick up players whose prices will come down. Thom said that he thought the Reds should have signed Kenny Lofton a couple of years ago (Iíll bet he had a young body too. Of course it would have saved us from Corey Patterson) Marty said that the Cards are close to re-signing Matt Holliday based on the comments made by La Russa the other day. (And it is a done deal after all.)
The first caller asked if the Reds were going to leave their minor league team in Sarasota and how was Joe doing in regards to voting for the Frick award. Marty said that Joe has made the final 10 for the 3rd straight year. Marty trashed the voting procedure that was done on Facebook. Marty also said that the Reds minor league team will move to Bradenton.
The next caller asked if the Reds will have some minor league teams come in and play at GAB while they are on road trips. Marty said other teams like the Padres (and Cubs) have done that before. He said thatís not something you want to do every year and the Reds did something similar when they played the minor league futures teams in North Carolina and Dayton. Thom said that itís probably a money loser once you figure in travel expenses, hotel rooms and staffing the stadium.
After commercial, the next caller asked Marty about the signings and trades that have been made so far and why he thinks Ron Santo isnít in the HOF. Marty thinks that he should be in the HOF and he also thinks that Boras screwed up with Holliday because he believes re-signing with StL wasnít in the cards (no pun intended). He also called out Jason Bay as the most mercenary player in baseball for saying that signing with the Mets was at the top of the list. He doesnít think playing in that park is what he really wanted. Thom used David Wrightís bad year as an example and also finds it tough to believe Bay really wanted to play there.
The next caller asked if the Reds would re-sign Jeff Keppinger. Marty said he didnít know he was a free agent but doesnít think heíll come back here. He then said that the Reds have done nothing to address their needs - power hitter, shortstop and a starter. He also said that John Fay told them during commercial that the Sarasota team is going to go to Lynchburg, VA and not Bradenton.
The next caller asked if the Reds had a chance to sign Miguel Tejada. Thom said he is probably too expensive but the longer he goes without being signed, the more his price comes down and the better shot the Reds have of signing him. Thom and Marty think heís a good player and Marty says heís fundamentally sound and can still be productive.
Marty said that the Red Sox signed Adrian Beltre and that makes the Mike Lowell situation interesting and they will probably showcase him in ST. Thom is wondering why the Sox spent so much to sign him since heís coming off an injury.
After commercial, the next caller said that she didnít vote for Joe this year and doesnít see the point since he hasnít got in yet. Thom said that the fansí votes get him in the door and after that itís up to the committee.
The next caller asked about bringing in Orlando Hudson. Thom said heíd be expensive and heís never played anywhere besides 2nd and the Reds are committed to keeping Brandon at 2nd. The caller asked if the Reds could convert him to SS and play hi behind Janish (Huh?! If you actually spend eleventey million dollars on Hudson you sure as heck arenít having him back up Janish.) Thom said he probably wonít go anywhere if he isnít playing 2nd.
The next caller asked what transactions the Reds have made. He also would like to trade Harang and he loves Janish. He thinks Janish should bat 8th and Brandon should bat 2nd (Ah, ah. SS bats 2nd. And Brandon bats cleanup, dude) He also wants to know about Gomes. Marty said Gomes is still out there. He said the Reds re-signed Razor Ramon and restructured Rolenís deal they also signed Nix to a minor league deal.
The next caller asked when Travis Wood would be ready. Thom said heís probably in the mix as the 5th starter. Marty said that Walt said at RedsFest that barring a signing or trade, Wood would get strong consideration for the 5th spot.
After commercial, the next caller asked if Cozart or Frazier would get a look at SS. Thom said they might be pretty good options. Out of nowhere, Marty said that they should take a serious look at Juan Francisco since heís destroying Dominican League pitching (Seems like someone has been saying that we donít need any more left handed hitting. I wonder who that was?) Thom seems to think that RH hitters arenít a priority with Stubbs, Brandon, Rolen and Razor Ramon. Marty said that someone said itís better to have a LH hitting stud than a RH hitting stiff. ( )
The next caller asked if Stubbs will make the team. Marty said heís the incumbent but heíll have to play well enough to keep the job. Marty thought he did an impressive job last year so heíll be the starter but if itís not him and the alternative is Willy T., then God bless Drew Stubbs. (Amen!) The caller said he didnít want to see Willy or Dickerson.
The next caller said that outside of putting Francisco in LF, he doesnít have a future on the team since heís stuck at 3rd behind Rolen for a few more years. Marty said he has a good point. The caller also said heíd rather see Dickerson in CF than Willy T. Thom said thatís safe to say and the guy everyone is forgetting is Heisey.
The next caller asked about the Anderson signing and he seems to be redundant. Marty said he is probably a AAA guy and he gives you more depth and competition.
The next caller wondered if the Reds would add some speed. (More Willy T.!!!!) Marty said they only have two legit base stealers in the lineup and thatís Brandon and Stubbs. Bruce may run some but thatís pretty much it. Thom said that based on a conversation he had with Eric Davis in ST, Bruce and Votto are more than capable of stealing more bases. He said Votto stole plenty while he was on rehab but when he got called back up, he didnít run at all.
The next caller asked if the Reds caravan will stop in Indiana. Marty said it will and Indianapolis should be on the list when it comes out in a week or so.
The next caller asked if the Reds would re-sign Gomes since he has such a good season in the time he played. He thinks heís worth $7-8M a year and heís just like Dunn except heís a better fielder. (Yikes) Marty and Thom said it was a stretch to compare him to Dunn.
Thus endeth the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 1-5-10. So let it be written. So let it be done.
