Jose Offerman completely out of control...again...

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4833375

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Former major league All-Star Jose Offerman threw a punch at an umpire during an argument in a Dominican winter league game Saturday night, the second time in 2 years that he's attacked someone on a baseball field.
Offerman, manager of the Licey Tigers, appeared to hit first base umpire Daniel Rayburn in the face or neck with his fist during a heated discussion in a game against the Cibao Giants. Rayburn fell to the ground.

Offerman was detained by stadium security and taken to a police station to wait until the end of the game to see if Rayburn would press charges.
The Giants were winning 6-0 in the third inning of the final game of the winter league semifinal playoff series when plate umpire Jason Bradley ejected catcher Ronny Paulino for arguing balls and strikes.
Offerman came onto the field to talk to Bradley, but ended up arguing with Rayburn.
It was the latest violent outburst by Offerman, an All-Star infielder with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1995 and Boston Red Sox in 1999.
On Aug. 14, 2007, he was batting for the Long Island Ducks against the Bridgeport Bluefish in an independent minor league game when pitcher Matt Beech hit him with a fastball. Offerman charged the mound with his bat and swung at least twice, striking Beech and Bluefish catcher John Nathans.
In February 2009, Nathans sued Offerman in U.S. District Court in Bridgeport, seeking $4.8 million in damages. Nathans said the attack left him with permanent, career-ending injuries.
Offerman last played in the big leagues in 2005 with the New York Mets. He batted .273 during his 15 seasons in the majors.

Well, right before he punched him, the ump put his chest against Jose's chest. Obviously, it is socially unacceptable to punch the ump, but I think he certainly was begging for it.

dude can't take a punch....seriously though a couple of things I noticed...first of all that is one nice looking stadium and secondly everything looks more "slick" than I guess I was envisioning from a Domincan league game including the nice uni's.

It almost looked like he went down before he was hit, ala WWE.

I was thinking the same thing. Almost looked like a "phantom" punch.

    Offerman gets lifetime Dominican ban
    By Enrique Rojas
    ESPNdeportes.com

ORLANDO -- Jose Offerman's career as a baseball manager was over Monday, at least in the Dominican Winter Baseball League.

The league suspended Offerman, interim manager of the Licey Tigers, for life after an incident Saturday in which he tried to hit American umpire Daniel Rayburn in the face. Offerman was arguing a batter's strike count in a playoff game against the Ciba Giants at Quisqueya Stadium in the Dominican Republic.

Because of the incident, Rayburn and three other American umpires working in the Dominican league resigned and left the country, forcing the league to use native umpires in the league's finals that start Monday between Cibao and the Escogido Lions.

The umpires, Rayburn, Jayson Bradley, Justin Vogel and Barry Larson, said they feared for their personal safety after receiving threats from fans after Saturday's game.

Leonardo Matos-Berrido, the league president, said the decision to ban Offerman can't be appealed due to the magnitude of the offense.

"The decision ... is definitive," said Matos-Berrido. "Offerman is excluded for life from Dominican baseball."

Regarding the alleged threats to the umpires, Matos-Berrido said he was requesting an investigation from the Dominican police.

Offerman, 41, took over as the Tigers' manager for the second year in a row, this time from American manager Dave Jauss.

Last season, when he was still an active player, Offerman accepted the job during a critical time for the franchise and led it to its 20th league championship.

A couple of days after being fired, Jauss was suspended by the league for two years for bumping an umpire during one of the playoffs games he managed.

In 2007, Offerman, a two-time All-Star during his 15 seasons in the majors, hit Bridgeport Bluefish catcher John Nathans in the head with a bat during an independent minor league game. Offerman, playing for the Long Island Ducks, had been hit by a pitch from Matt Beech of the Bluefish.

A court subsequently forced Offerman into anger-management treatment.

Offerman also faces a $4.8 million civil suit brought by Nathans, who claims he continues to suffer from problems stemming from the incident, which he says ended his professional career.

It's kinda like taking a charge in basketball, if an umpire is struck or pushed then the umpire will react in a manner that no one in the stadium will doubt that it happened.

His chin never moved....he took a dive. No condoning, but the ump baited him and reeled him in.

I just watched the video on tv. The ump didn't get hit. Not even close. However, Offerman should be treated like he did actually make contact.
