Jerry Hairston signs with Padres for $2.1M

The Padres signed Jerry Hairston Jr. to a one-year $2.1M deal.
    In 2009 he posted a line of .251/.315/.394 .
    He was worth 1.0 WAR.

To me this is interesting. ORG members rip Reds GMs for paying $2M for a bench player. IMO this is kinda the going price when you have to go on the open market for a decent bench player.

This is why I think its vital for the team to not only have great prospects but also a stable of just ok ones. Guys like Hanigan, Dickerson & Fisher contribute to wins but do so on the cheap.

related issue: Lets look at the Reds IF situation. Right now our 2 backup infielders are Rosales & Sutton. Both have a good minor league pedigree but haven't had success in the bigs. Should the Reds have signed a guy like JHJ if it cost $2.1M? what if that meant the Chapman offer was $2M less and he signed elsewhere? or the team misses out on a couple of 16 year old prospects from Latin America? IMO when the Reds are faced with this type of dilemma they would be best to sign some retread to a minor league deal & hope that either the retread or Rosales or Sutton can step up and be a decent bench player.

I'd be an even bigger fan of this move if they took that 2.1M and used it (they = Reds) to resign Gomes....

Agreed. No chance to see him manning SS this year! Don't get me wrong, he was a solid bench player for the Reds while he was here and I have no ill will towards him at all, I just don't want to see him as a starter here and I think he would have been if brought back.

It's good to see Jerry's getting a chance to play on the same team as his brother, Scott.

Scott was traded to the A's last July.

Jerry's ok, he's not the pits, notr is he Tony Phillips either. he was miscast here when hewas expected to be a starter and a SS, but that's what happens when your team has been having trouble finding a SS for the first time in 55 years.

He was traded back to the Pads a few days ago.
"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."

Re: Jerry Hairston signs with Padres for $2.1M

Hairston was one of the best free agent infielders left on the market, but that's very faint praise. It wouldn't have angered me if the Reds brought him in (although I don't like the price), but if the Reds bring in one of the lesser middle infielders on a major league contract, I'm going to get mad for not signing Hairston.

Kouz and Eric Sogard for Hairston and Aaron Cunningham.
