The Padres signed Jerry Hairston Jr. to a one-year $2.1M deal.
In 2009 he posted a line of .251/.315/.394 .
He was worth 1.0 WAR.
To me this is interesting. ORG members rip Reds GMs for paying $2M for a bench player. IMO this is kinda the going price when you have to go on the open market for a decent bench player.
This is why I think its vital for the team to not only have great prospects but also a stable of just ok ones. Guys like Hanigan, Dickerson & Fisher contribute to wins but do so on the cheap.
related issue: Lets look at the Reds IF situation. Right now our 2 backup infielders are Rosales & Sutton. Both have a good minor league pedigree but haven't had success in the bigs. Should the Reds have signed a guy like JHJ if it cost $2.1M? what if that meant the Chapman offer was $2M less and he signed elsewhere? or the team misses out on a couple of 16 year old prospects from Latin America? IMO when the Reds are faced with this type of dilemma they would be best to sign some retread to a minor league deal & hope that either the retread or Rosales or Sutton can step up and be a decent bench player.
