Olney: Josh Willingham back on the market

    Via Twitter:

Buster_ESPN Heard this: The Nationals have again put Josh Willingham back out on the market. If they deal him, could clear the way for Dunn to go to OF.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

I think you go for this guy.. They could get a decent package for him based on what's left on the market. What do you offer?

Not sure what I would offer in a trade for him. I would be semi-interested though.

He's not a free agent though, is he?

Why not trade them Chapman? We can save 30 mill we could dump into payroll this season and maybe sign someone big, or trade for CC Sabathia, maybe the Yankees will take Wily T and Mike Lincoln.

Yeah, I misread that at first. Not sure what I would give up in a trade, but I'd like to see him in a Reds uni if the price isn't steep.

I have to believe Matt Maloney and and a few prospects would be enough to fill that teams future plans would be enough.

Matt Maloney's too much. If they're advertising this directly that they want to move him, they're in a weak position. And we don't really need him so we'd be trading doubly from strength. Lecure might be about right.

If you didn't want to pay Gomes (.267, 20, .879 OPS) 2 million, why would you trade players to get Willingham (.260, 24, .863 OPS) at 4.79 million for 2010?

But that's 300-odd PAs of Gomes vs. 500 PAs of Willingham in 2009.

Willingham is a career .840 OPS/below average OF

    Gomes is a career .801 OPS/poor OF/borderline DH

If you're using WAR, Willingham was more productive last year than Gomes has been in his entire career.

That may be a good point, but Walt has stated numerous times that he is all about pitching and defense. While Willingham certainly won't be Franklin Gutierrez out there in left-field, if I am reading the stats correctly, he was above average defensively.

Also, Willingham does not have the plattoon splits that Gomes has.

I would be a big fan of Willingham in Cincinnati, but I don't think there is the room in the budget. I would not mind Walt selling high on Arroyo for a legit shortstop for now and the future and us trading Maloney plus other prospects for Willingham if that's all that's needed.

Re: Olney: Josh Willingham back on the market

Will Willingham outperform this set of alternatives?: 1. A Balentien, Heisey, or Frazier platoon with Nix or Dickerson 2. Balentien, Heisey, or Frazier alone 3. Frazier 4. Francisco or Francisco together with a platoon partner; 5. Votto, if Alonso can move him to LF? I think it's very likely he cannot outperform all those alternatives, but I wouldn't mind adding him into the mix for the right price--but giving up a potential left-handed starter is too much. No more than Lecure at most. Remember the Nats don't want to pay that salary of his either.

I would rather see how Frazier, Stubbs, & Heisley can do this year. I see the Reds putting together a good young team, but I think their ceiling is limited this year with Edison being out. So let's see what some of this young talent can do, especially Frazier because LF is really the only spot he could fit into for the next few years.
