I'm going Smit. Seems like he's been around forever, but at age 23 he's putting up a 3.05 ERA in AA with less hits than innings pitched. And he's a good sized lefty.

I'm a big fan of Smit's (although I wouldn't put him in the Reds' top-40 at this point). He's only 24 years old and has very good peripherals aside from the walks. Once he gets those reduced, I think he could go back to being a very legitimate prospect again. A lot of people forget that he had about the same amount of hype as Homer Bailey during the 2006 season.

Homer Bailey was arguably the best pitching prospect in baseball back then. I can't even find Smit's name on the Twins top ten prospects list that year.

I wanted to go Bucholz again but frankly I'm tired of voting for guys with no shot, might as well make mine count. Horst it is, let's get it over with.

You're right--he never had Bailey's hype. Still, I've seen a couple different lists (BP being one of them) that had Smit as a top-10 prospect. Baseball America wasn't ever quite as high on him, but he was still in their top-20. I remember hearing that he had questionable mechanics, and after they were changed, he struggled. Now that he's getting more comfortable with the adjustments, his numbers are improving. If he learns to cut down on his walks, he has the stuff to be an effective reliever. There are many guys on the board I'd take higher than Smit, but I wouldn't exactly call him a non-prospect.

Re: Who is Redszone's #38 prospect?

Was a top-10 prospect and now he profiles best as a lefty reliever not in the top 40 of our franchise? Wow, It seems to me that they made a huge mistake in changing his questionable mechanics, did he lose velocity or what else happened? There has to be more than just a change in mechanics in order to explain a drop that far down the list.
As for the vote I went with Horst again as I have him around 25 on my rankings. Two solid pitches and looks to be a solid backend starter or an above average lefty reliever.
