Lane Kiffin gets his biggest recruit yet

He just hasn't hit puberty yet. Scout also reporting that Kiffin is to visit the Cedars-Sinai neonatal unit next week and expects to get at least two more verbals.

    Sills, 13, commits to USC

David Sills, a 13-year-old quarterback from Bear County, Del., has committed to play at USC, according to his private quarterback coach, Steve Clarkson.

ESPN.com's Shelley Smith reported that Sills, a seventh-grader, has verbally accepted a scholarship offer from Trojans coach Lane Kiffin. Sills plays at Red Lion Christian Academy. His coach, Eric Day, confirmed the decision in the Delaware News Journal.

"I'm very excited, but I was very, very nervous," Sills said in the News Journal report. "It was very cool, but my heart was beating so fast and I was scared. But after it was over, I was so excited and pumped."

Sills' team was in the Los Angeles area to play a couple of games last November.

The monitoring of players as young as Sills is relatively new to college football, but basketball coaches have been doing it for years. Two years ago, Washington coach Ty Willingham admitted he had offered a scholarship to receiver Kasen Williams, a high school freshman.
All models are wrong. Some of them are useful.

When Sills asked Kiffin if he'd still be at USC when Sills arrived, Kiffin quietly backed out of the room.

Cheaper to buy the young ones. After all the money for investigations, USC can't afford to buy the high schoolers anymore.

Most will just write this off as Kiffin being Kiffin. Some will laugh and just roll there eyes.. But this is just stupid and it honestly makes me mad. Why is there a need to do this? Unreal. 7th grade...

This really isn't that unheard of. Not so much in football, but NCAA basketball recruiting starts in middle school now.

Talking to the kid and establishing a relationship with him and his guradians.. Fine. I'm cool with that. But offering a kid that isn't 140 pounds yet a scholarship is too much. At least wait until he plays his freshman year in High School.

I expect Chris Hanson to walk in and say to Kiffin, "Hello, why don't you take seat and expalin to me what you are doing here?"

It's really not a big deal. Kiffin's offer is not binding nor is the kid's verbal acceptance

I agree with Sea Ray, not a big deal but a pretty big thrill for the kid.

Reading C Trent's blog today he said the youngest he had ever heard was for Chris Leake to Wake Forest and by Leake's freshman year of college, Leake was at Florida and the Wake Forest coach was with the Colts.

Taylor King verballed to UCLA his freshmen year of high school. Ended up signing with Duke, but transferred to Villanova after a year.

This is purely anecdotal but I recall in the early 80s when Anthony Munoz had his son that he was sent a scholarship offer from USC. I remember hearing that during a Bengals game at the time. Obviously he didn't end up there.

I think I'll send USC some videos of my boy playing ball. You never know, he could get offered a scholarship at the age of 17 months.

Chris' brother C.J. was one of, if not the top, senior QB recruit at that time. C.J. surprised a lot of folks by committing to WF. C.J. transferred to Tennessee after his freshman season, IIRC. Chris intended to follow big brother to UT, but by the time Chris was a senior, C.J. had been largely ignored by Phillip Fulmer at UT in favor of Casey Claussen. Chris selected Florida because he thought his brother had been treated unfairly by Fulmer.

I still think that Chris could have been a star QB if he had been in a stable situation throughout his college career. The guy could throw some of the prettiest spirals I've ever seen.
