Coddington. His defense has been praised, he hit surprisingly well last year (tailed off considerably at the end, but overall showed the capacity to make good contact), and his intangibles are said to be outstanding. Plus, he's a catcher.

I have been voting Bucholz but I think I am gonna go with Fleury, I don't put much into a lack of numbers last year coming into pro ball. Early round catcher out of a big conference gotta have decent upside, moreso than most still on the list.

Re: Who is Redszone's #40 prospect?

I went with Mark Fleury because I think he's going to have a big break-out year. Here are some other guys I considered:

Tucker Barnhart - I love his ceiling, but I need to see more of his at-bats before saying he's a top-40 prospect
Alex Buchholz - only if he can stick at SS; otherwise, he'll need to develop a bit more power
Kevin Coddington - a known commodity, but I don't think he's more than a backup catcher in the big leagues
Daryl Thompson - if you ignore 2009, he probably would've been considered for the top 10

Re: Who is Redszone's #40 prospect?

It always surprises me how much mileage some guys get (on this forum) from their draft position. For example, that's the only explanation I can see for Fleury leading Coddington. Maybe others have seen the two of them (I haven't) and are better informed, but from the information available, I'm just not getting it. From what I've read of the two of them, Coddington has earned better marks defensively. Both of them played last year at age 21 (although Coddington is 10 months older). In Billings, Fleury was 198/284/382. In Dayton, Coddington was 278/336/369. Coddington is also a bigger guy. But he was a 44th-round draft choice, and Fleury was a 4th-rounder.

Re: Who is Redszone's #40 prospect?

For me, the reason Fleury was drafted relatively high still holds. He's not far enough removed from his college career to disregard it, and I like his power potential.

But once you get down to number forty, it's not an exact science anyway. I hope they both make progress this year.

Re: Who is Redszone's #40 prospect?

When it comes to defense, I'd take Coddington over Fleury in a heartbeat, but I think Fluery has a higher ceiling. Like I said before, I see Coddington as a Ryan Hanigan lite, and I think he'll be nothing more than a major league backup. On the other hand, if Fleury fulfills his potential, I think he could be better than Eddie Taubensee (both defensively and with his on-base skills).

I know some of you are wanting to go to 50, but I'm done at 40. For those who want to extend it to 50, feel free to take over and start the next poll anytime you want.

I'll start a thread later breaking down the top 40.

I'm willing to carry the torch, but maybe it'd be best to take a break and go over a recap of the top-40 before moving on.

If anybody has the means, would be nice to get a little write-up on each remaining prospect if we extend this thing...

That would have been nice 25ish prospects ago.
