    Must-Have Freeware

I just ordered a new computer, and I'm wondering if any of you have any recommendations for freeware I should download. Here are some things I'm definitely downloading:

    Google Chrome
    Winamp
    avast!
    Malwarebytes
    Hijack-This
    CCleaner
    BitTorrent
    WinRAR
    QuickTime

I know you mentioned Chrome, but I would recommend Firefox with the NoScript and AdBlock plug-ins to help protect/speed the computer. Everything else I can think of is already on your list.

    Mozilla Firefox
    Mozilla Thunderbird
    AVG
    OpenOffice
If you do a lot of writing, MiKTeK and a LaTeX compiler like TeXnicCenter (free) or WinEDT (not free, but much better than any free compiler). JabRef is a good TeX resource for citations.
    R for statistical work.

    WinRAR isn't freeware, btw.

Great suggestions. I also forgot to mention Skype (even though Google will probably make it obsolete within the next couple years).

I have it too, and really happy with it so far. Smart defrag is a must have for any windows user. I've had Windows 7 for about 4 months now, and it has never been more than 3% fragmented. Glary Utilities is like CCleaner, but i like it better. And IMO Spybot S&D is one of the better anti-spyware programs out there.

I loaded ubuntu on my 11 year old daughter's acer netbook. very sweet. Added it to an old Pentium III for my son, just need a new video card and it runs pretty quick on it too with less than a Gb of RAM.
