    Hot Stove League show report

Here is the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 3-2-10. Lance McAlister was the host in the studio tonight because, as he said, everyone else is in Arizona. Lance said that the game against the Indians on Friday will be on the radio and Lincoln will start for the Reds in that game. He said Lincoln is looking forward to the start even thought he hasn’t started for a while. Lance said Lincoln’s come a long way from last year when he had surgery on a cervical disc in his neck. Lincoln said that it was kind of scary and he didn’t have all the feeling in his fingers then. Lincoln said he feels good now and is going to be in the mix for the 5th spot in the rotation with Lehr, Chapman and Leake. Lance said that’s one of the few battles left for a starting role on the team. Lance said LF may have an opening but it looks like Dickerson and Gomes in a platoon right now. He said there could be a bullpen spot open but that’s about it. Lance reminisced about 2003 when there was supposed to be a good pitching staff which consisted of starters Ryan Dempster, Jimmy Haynes, Danny Graves and Paul Wilson. Among the bullpen pitchers were Gabe White, Scott Williamson, Scott Sullivan and John Reidling. Chris (RedsZone Favorite) Reitsma was either going to be the 5th starter or work out if the bullpen and there were 3 other spots open for guys like Bruce Chen, Jose Acevedo, Seth Etherton,. Luke Hudson, Pete Harnisch, Lance Davis, Josias Manzinillo, Kent Mercker, Felix Heredia, Jimmy Anderson and Jose Rijo. (Sounds like a de la Hoz special).

Jeff Brantley called in from the road somewhere in North Texas. Lance asked him if seeing Chapman pitch was at the top of his wish list. Jeff said he saw Chapman pitch before in the WBC but not in person. He said you really have to see someone pitch in person to get an idea of how well he pitches. He said it’s exciting that not only Chapman but other young players are there that have promise. Lance asked Jeff who he thought is the frontrunner for the 5th spot in the rotation. Jeff said that Chapman will be afforded every opportunity to be the 5th starter if he’s ready which means if he can throw strikes. He said that he’s going to be scrutinized heavily and if they see his control isn’t there or he isn’t able to handle it he’ll start in AAA. Jeff said that he’s interested in seeing Lehr. He said he’s had the whole winter off for the first time in years and he seems to win everywhere except for the big leagues because he’s so tired from pitching winter ball to make ends meet. (They have a name for guys like that, Jeff. It’s called AAAA pitchers.) Lance said he was pitching on fumes at the end of the year but he really contributed. Jeff said he did and could really benefit the Reds. He said he’s not a power pitcher and knows how to pitch. He said if his fastball is 88-90, with his offspeed stuff, he can get out of the gate really quick.

After commercial, the first caller asked about Tom Seaver coming to Reds Fest (Great idea) and wondered if he’s ever been there. Jeff said he doesn’t know but if it were up to him, he’d be welcome. The caller asked about Bryan Price and what he might bring to the table that Pole didn’t. Jeff said that anytime there’s a new pitching coach you get a fresh set of eyes. He said it may make a big difference with Harang and maybe a different approach and philosophy could help him. He said Diamondback pitchers have spoken highly of him. He said he has a great work ethic, keeps an eye on the pitchers and is a pitcher’s fan. Jeff said when he pitched under Gullett he was always there to support him and that’s all one can ask of a pitching coach. He said Price is intelligent and has a great plan on what he wants the Reds to do and he can transfer a lot of knowledge to those guys. He thinks a lot of the Reds pitchers are hungry for the knowledge that Price can give them.

The next caller said that he felt that Dusty erred by saying in the paper that Dickerson opened the door for Stubbs by being injured. He said that you shouldn’t lose your job due to an injury and for some reason Dickerson has been shut out. Jeff said that if you’re a 5 year veteran and you get hurt, you deserve to get the job back and the job was never Dickerson’s. He said Dickerson never established himself there and if he had, he’d get first shot at the job.

Thus endeth the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 3-3-10. So let it be written. So let it be done.

Of all the players on this team to look forward to seeing this spring (Bailey, Cueto, Chapman, Bruce, Votto), Cowboy picks the journeyman pitcher.

Thanks for the updates as always Chip
If you have a losing record at Reds games, please stop going.
