    Five pitches

    Here:

Qualitatively, the only real difference between John Smoltz in 2009 (3-8, 6.35 ERA) and the John Smoltz who's heading to the Hall of Fame (213-155, 3.33) was five pitches that turned into five home runs.

I am instantly reminded of Crash's speech to Nuke in the pool hall about the difference between a .300 hitter and a .250 hitter. (or some numbers like that)

Over 500 at bats, its 25 hits, or 1 hit per week in a normal baseball season.

And if Eric Milton could get back a handful (or two) of pitches...

Back in the spring of 1966, Tommy Harper discussed the same logic regarding his strategy to bunt for a hit a week in the coming season. He had hit .250-something the season before and had done his math. Unfortunately, his math was better than his hitting/bunting.
