Cardinals reassign Jukich, want to trade for him.

The Cardinals have reassigned Ben Jukich to the minor leagues. St. Louis selected the former Denfeld Hunter in the Rule 5 Draft, which means they must offer him back to the Cincinnati Reds. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Cardinals are still interested in keeping Jukich in their minor league system, and are working on a trade to keep the Duluth native.

Jukich appeared in one game this spring for the Cardinals, allowing two hits, and one run over two innings of work.

Never realized he was gone, so I guess there is no need to bring him back.

We get him back for free at this point.

What the article points to is that the CARDS want to keep him, but in order to do that, they'd have to trade something to us for him now - since they released him.

I think that in a year or two, one of these guys - Frazier, Dorn, Valaika, Cumberland, Stubbs - will be ready to replace Dunn. They won't hit as many home runs as Dunn, but they should have similar OPS. - 757690, July 22, 2008

Alonso will be playing 1B for the REDS and batting 4th one year from today. - Kingspoint, July 9, 2009

I don't think that's right. My understanding was that if you take a guy in the rule-5 draft, you pay to pay the team you took him from 10k (or some ammount). If you then don't keep him on your big league roster, you have to offer him back to the original team for half that. Granted that 5k is peanuts to a baseball team (assuming those numbers are right), but it's possible the Reds could decide they want to keep all the cash.

That is True but it is not 10K to 5K it is 50K to 25K so their is a difference
