looks like the twins got a little discount from mauer, but i still think it's a bad idea for a small market team to commit so much to one player.

Wow. Never did I consider an 8 year deal. That is a TON of guaranteed money.

That being said, he's only 27, and being in the AL he can easily move to DH if his back startes to give him trouble before age 35.

Great deal though, they never should have even been a hint of a trade possibility. Hometown kid, had to be done.

    PEACE

I think that in a year or two, one of these guys - Frazier, Dorn, Valaika, Cumberland, Stubbs - will be ready to replace Dunn. They won't hit as many home runs as Dunn, but they should have similar OPS. - 757690, July 22, 2008

Alonso will be playing 1B for the REDS and batting 4th one year from today. - Kingspoint, July 9, 2009

I agree, he won't be a catcher for all 8 years, so he will probably be a DH for a portion of the contract at least part time. 23 mil a year for a C/DH is absurd. They may get 5-6 good years of him being a catcher but I would be surprised to see them get more. Also, hopefully last season wasn't a fluke, it would be bad if they paid that much for a 10-15 home run hitting catcher. His early career looks very similar to that of Jason Kendall's.

However he may be worth his contract simply in ticket sales, memorabilia, clothing, etc. he generates from being a hometown here. Hopefully the deal works out well for them. It's good to see a stud player sticking with his hometown team for a bit of a discount.

Screw that jerk Bud Selig, and his efforts to get rid of baseball in Minnesota, when he had the sorriest franchise in baseball in Milwaukee.

Hope the Twins continue to have the great success that they've had over the last 60 years.

AMEN! This small market team always finds a way to be in the hunt. They are so adept at drafting and developing players, that when guys get too expensive, they just move them on, because they already have his replacement in the pipe. Difference is, Mauer is in a once in a multiple lifetimes player. A better than average catcher who happens to hit the crap out of the ball. He will catch until Morneau moves on.

If you can't already tell, the Twins are my favorite AL team.
