    Jack Cust DFA

He's on a one-year $2.65 mil contract. Completely awful fielder, bat seemingly on the decline. Add in his propensity for strikeouts, and I doubt the Reds try to claim him. But, pretty good power and OBP.

A's fans are outraged, and A's players are disappointed. They know they need him to compete in 2010.

I like Cust, but don't see him fitting in on the Reds

Yeah, he has no role on the Reds. He also seemed to indicate he'd accept a demotion to AAA if the A's don't trade him.

Cust should have been given a better chance in the Majors sooner in his career. He wasted away in San Diego and the National League for a couple of years because they didn't have a DH and he played Defense a lot worse than Alonso.

The A's finally gave him a fair shot 3 years later than when he should have gotten one and he rewarded them with a .900+ OPS his first full season. But, he peaked (no, he wasn't a steroids user as someone here so foolishly suggested), as he never was going to be a great hitter, just a very, very good one for 2 or 3 seasons (he only got the chance at the end of that peak). His K's went up each of the last two years as his walks went down and his HR's went down.

The A's gave him a big contract this winter for a guy they could have projected would repeat the same season he had last season of low average, decent walks, high K's, and high HR's, while having horrible defense.

He loses his large salary from the A's if he doesn't accept the minor league assignment and as it's unlikely he ever gets offered more than $600K again in a season, he'd be wise to take the $2.6M.

He's always been strictly a DH, and the A's were the only team ever willing to put him in the field for any amount of at-bats that might negatively effect the club's pitching.

He's still a tremendous LH-HR hitter with the ability to get on base if a club needs a runner in late innings or needs that HR hit.

An AL team with a weak LH power bench should pick him up if he chooses to not accept the DFA, but I don't think he'll chance that the new contract he gets (likely only $400K-$600K as any team will wait for him to pass waivers first) will make it worth just so he can be a pinch-hitter off a bench. He'll likely get recalled in Oakland anyway for the same role, while making more money.

    There's a reason they cut him -- he's bad.

He was all power, no glove, no average. A mediocre player in every sense of the word.

He is pretty much a poor man's Adam Dunn.
