Why do many teams take an off-day the day after OD?

Correct me if I am wrong but the Reds opened up at night years ago. They continued to offer the Reds the first game of the year. Marge Schott accepted it the first year but still maintained that OD was the first day game and conducted the OD parade for the first day game. After that first year Schott refused to open up at night and MLB found two other teams. IIRC the Cards player homered in the 1st at bat.

Reds have never had a night opener, the Reds also shared OD for eons with the Senators who were the unofficial AL starters. There was never a deal with MLB and teh Reds, it just occurred that way 90% of the time and thus everyone thought it was a given it would always happen that way.

OK, 1994 I remember now, so yeah it was lost in the fact the season was washed out.

Indeed. Baseball in 1994 never having happened...that season still makes me sad.

If the game gets rained out and there is a game scheduled for the next day, wouldn't that still be opening day?

Just make it another day game.

At that point it might be a ticket issue. People work so hard to get opening day tickets, and it's usually pretty easy to get tickets to the second game of the season. If opening day gets rained out and that next game turns into opening day, then all those people that went nuts for tickets get screwed

It was on Easter Sunday too, IIRC.
